This Cool 1986 Suburban Dually Is on the Block at Mecum’s Arizona Bid Bash
It's almost Mecum Auctions time again! The bidding takes place March 16 to 19 in Glendale, Arizona, and live gavel-to-gavel coverage is available through our online subscription service, MotorTrend+ (sign up for a free trial today!), or on your television via the MotorTrend channel.
There's something about the southwest when it comes to trucks. Pickups are plentiful there, and based on the wide variety of rigs that are up for grabs at the Arizona auction, we're very optimistic about the collection that awaits Senior Content Producer KJ Jones at the Mecum Auctions event in Houston, Texas, April 1 and 2, as well.
For the first time ever, KJ will be on the floor at a big-time auto auction, and hopes are high that this upcoming Glendale sale will be a great precursor to what could be the most truck-heavy event on Mecum's tour.
We've already noted two cool trucks being auctioned in Arizona: a 2020 Jeep Gladiator that was displayed at the SEMA Show in 2019, and a customized 1963 Chevy Greenbrier Sports Wagon that garnered great response.
This teaser highlights a rare, dual-rear-wheel Chevy Suburban. The sample seen here is a 1986 model that wasn't produced by the factory (none of these rare unicorns were), but to many truck fans is a rig that Chevrolet brass should have authorized and offered for interested buyers. Can you imagine driving something like this today, with a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine under the hood instead of a basic big-block Chevy V-8?

1986 Chevy Suburban Silverado Dually
First, this 1986 Chevy Suburban is not an actual 1-ton dually. It's a 3/4-ton rig that's been upfitted with a dual-rear-wheel axle, the appropriate finishing fenders, and so on. And for Chevrolet Suburban know-it-alls, yes, it's a Silverado in frame only; Suburbans and pickups share the same chassis, but the truckwagon has never formally had Silverado in its name.
Big-Block Chevy Power
A 7.4-liter (454ci) big-block Chevrolet engine sits beneath the dually Suburban's hood. The limited information we have doesn't reference any modifications, but even the stock powerplant has plenty of oats.
Low Miles
In 2022, 42,000 miles is the mark of a creampuff, especially for a rig that's closing in on 40 years old.
Nothing's Perfect
We're guessing this image was included in the photo set for "full-disclosure" purposes—the 1986 Chevy Suburban dually is super clean, but it's not 100 percent flawless, as evidenced by the crack that runs down the dash cover.

Roadkill host David Freiburger has a soft spot in his heart for 'burbans with rear "Barn" doors that open wide and promote easier loading and unloading of items in the cargo area. We also like the look of the big, wide "hips" on a Suburban, with four tires tucked beneath them.
Dually Suburban
This 1986 Chevy Suburban isn't the "best" truck among all the custom rigs being auctioned, but to us it's very cool. You just don't see dually (what is a dually, anyway?) Suburbans anywhere, so its rarity makes it worthy of receiving our spotlight for Mecum Auctions' Glendale, Arizona, event.

ford escape-plug-in-hybrid Full OverviewBefore hitting the test track, we decided to take our 2021 Ford Escape Titanium Plug-In Hybrid up to a local mountain ski resort town, mostly for the drive back. It's satisfying to watch the hybrid compact SUV's available range increase as the regenerative braking system recovers energy. The phenomenon is enjoyed frequently simply because one is on the brakes quite a lot on a winding road coming down from almost 7,000 feet of elevation.Everything was cool (excuse the pun) until the faint odor of overheating began to waft into the cabin. Our regen system was evidently working overtime, at which point we decided to let the engine and physics do most of the vehicle's slowing. Still, we managed to take the Escape's EV range from nothing to nearly 20 miles (out of 37 max) just by using the brake pedal. Neat.Fuel Economy and RangeOur Escape Titanium PHEV test model is the top trim of a three-model 2021 lineup that also includes less expensive SE and SEL trim levels. Ford also offers a standard, non-plug-in hybrid that makes the choice a little tougher if fuel economy is your main goal.The Escape PHEV returned an admirable EPA-estimated 105 mpg-e combined, which leads a burgeoning small SUV plug-in hybrid segment that includes among others the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime AWD (94 mpg-e combined), 2022 Hyundai Tucson PHEV AWD (80 mpg-e combined), and 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid AWD (90 mpg-e combined). Its mileage not unexpectedly surpasses the combined mpg of the regular Escape Hybrid, too, which came in at 41 mpg for the front-wheel-drive model and 40 mpg for the all-wheel-driver.Total range for the 2021 Escape PHEV is an EPA-rated 520 miles, and as mentioned earlier, all-electric range is 37 miles, which are both strong. But the 2022 RAV4 Prime—with its larger capacity 18.1-kWh battery and significantly bigger 14.5-gallon gas tank—beat that combined range by 80 miles. It also gets 5 more all-electric miles. The Escape's 14.4-kWh battery capacity and 11.2-gallon tank still help it get more total range than the Crosstrek Hybrid, which has the least amount of battery capacity of the foursome (8.8 kWh), and the Tucson PHEV, which has the smallest fuel tank (11.1 gallons).The Escape PHEV weighs at least 100 pounds less than the Toyota or the Hyundai and is only offered in FWD, two additional factors that help its efficiency—and help in other ways, as well. It gets its motivation from a 165-hp 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four working in concert with an 83-hp electric motor to deliver a combined 200 hp.The RAV4 Prime and Crosstrek Hybrid have similar formulas, but the Toyota scales up while the Subie scales down. The RAV4 employs a 177-hp 2.5-liter inline-four and electric motors front and rear for a total of 302 hp and the Crosstrek uses a 137-hp 2.0-liter flat-four and two motors for a sum of 148 hp. The Tucson PHEV offers yet another method, a 180-hp 1.6-liter turbo-four for the front axle and electric motor for the rear developing a combined 261 hp. All except the Hyundai, which is outfitted with a six-speed automatic, are equipped with a CVT.What the Numbers SayBraking is one area where we see the Escape PHEV's mass working in its favor. In spite of a vague-feeling pedal, our test team found stopping power to be consistent, with the Ford SUV coming to a halt from 60 mph in an average of 123 feet, 4 feet shorter than the heavier Toyota. We have yet to receive test results for the Tucson PHEV, but a 2022 Tucson Hybrid AWD Limited we assessed averaged 129 feet.The Escape PHEV's steering was also unexpectedly communicative, especially for a modern hybrid FWD. That's where the Ford's dynamic strengths end, though."Power is just so-so, [and] as the laps added up, the [factory all-season] tires lost all sorts of grip, in both braking and on the skidpad," reports road test editor Chris Walton. Indeed, in our lateral acceleration and figure-eight tests, the 2021 Escape PHEV exhibited less grip than the 2021 RAV4 Prime and 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid, which was the last time we tested the current generation of each. As the plug-in Escape and RAV4 have similar setups and weight splits, suspension tuning and AWD traction likely also played roles.Straight-line quickness is also not the Escape PHEV's forte. It's swifter from 0-60 and through the quarter mile than the smaller, less powerful Crosstrek, but every hybrid is chasing the RAV4 Prime now. The Toyota snaps off 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and runs the quarter in 14.1 seconds at 98.7 mph, in each case more than two ticks quicker than the Escape. Our road test analyst Alan Lau put it succinctly: "[The Escape PHEV] is good off the line—and that's about it relative to the segment."What It's Like to Live WithFew shoppers will look at the 2021 Escape PHEV for driving pleasure. Practicality is the game here, and as the widest among small five-passenger SUVs, the Ford provides the most first-row space. But it's also not as long as the Tucson PHEV, which gives the Hyundai an edge in cargo space and rear passenger room.While the gas 2021 Escape is available in four trim levels, both the PHEV and Hybrid are pared to just three, the SE, SEL, and Titanium. Among the standard kit the range-topping model gets that the others don't are features like adaptive cruise control, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-speaker audio system, and hands-free power liftgate. Our test vehicle also came in Rapid Red premium exterior paint and with the Premium package, which consists of embroidered floor mats, a head-up display, perforated leather, leather-wrapped steering wheel, panoramic roof, and a wireless charging pad. The 2022 Escape PHEV is a carryover except for three new exterior paint colors: Atlas Blue Metallic, Flight Blue Metallic, and Iced Blue Metallic.Poking around the cabin, we were slightly dismayed at the build quality in some spots. For sure, there is a lot of hard plastic, but that wasn't even the chintziest thing we found. The Escape PHEV's 12-volt battery is in the spare tire well under the cargo area floor and its execution seriously looks like someone did the relocating in their home garage. Furthermore, there's a noticeable gap between the steering column and the cowling beneath that's supposed to hide the wiring harness under the dash but doesn't.We might be picking nits, but if we were springing for the top model of any lineup, those are things that would give us pause. Fortunately, there wasn't much else beyond those details. The seats were comfortable, and the ride was smooth. The only way we could tell the powertrain was switching between gas and electric was by listening for the internal combustion engine's muffled hum. Otherwise, there was no sensation to tip us off.Driver controls were laid out sensibly, and the Escape PHEV's infotainment system was easy to figure out. Its automatic high-beam headlights were excellent on unlit mountain passes, and generally its driver-assist technology was unobtrusive and useful. In back, we appreciated how easy it was to fold the second-row seats and how they were nearly flat with the cargo area floor when folded.Before we handed the Escape PHEV's keys to our test team, we also went through the process of charging it up to see what that was like. It offers both Level 1 110-volt charging from a standard house outlet and Level 2 240-volt charging, which works with a high-output outlet like ones used for larger household appliances. We found a Level 2 public charger nearby, and after leaving the Escape plugged in for a tad over three hours, we got back 32 miles out of 37 in EV range.Had we left it plugged in for the full 3.5 hours we likely would've gotten a full charge. For comparison, Toyota claims its RAV4 Prime can charge in as quick as 2.5 hours on a Level 2, while both Hyundai and Subaru say the Tucson PHEV and Crosstrek Hybrid, respectively, can get a full charge on a Level 2 in about two hours.PricingThe base model 2021 Escape PHEV SE stickers for $34,320 and the Escape PHEV Titanium starts off at $40,130. When we added the $395 premium paint and $2,500 Premium package, that figure rose to $43,025.With the cost of the add-ons on our tester, the Escape PHEV still comes in under the range-topping 2022 RAV4 Prime XSE, which retails for $44,340, and the 2022 Tucson PHEV Limited, which retails for $43,775. At $36,770, the smaller 2022 Crosstrek Hybrid, which is offered in just one trim, undercuts them all except the base Escape PHEV SE, which is thousands less.VerdictThat trip up and down the mountain highlighted the plug-in Escape's strengths like its chassis' spryness and smooth ride (provided you don't push it too hard), its passenger space, and of course the strong fuel economy that a hybrid can return. Less impressive were its quickness past the launch, limited cargo space, and ubiquitous interior plastics.At its best, the Escape PHEV is the smart choice. You're saving money both on the front end and over time. It gives you everything you need, and on the range-topping Titanium considerably more. And as strange as this sounds, it's available all over the country (unlike the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, which is sold for dealer stock only in California at this time).But while the 2021 Escape Titanium PHEV is good in the areas that count, there is little to no premium-ness to this top trim. Even its jellybean shape is uninspiring and could use some harder edges. It's almost unfair that something as dynamically superior as the RAV4 Prime is in the same segment.That said, we don't think track testing results will make a ton of difference to most hybrid compact SUV shoppers. We do think a good deal will. And at the end of the day, if you're here to party in your small crossover, you better be ready to pay for it.Looks good! We like our comparison tests to come to definitive conclusions, but that didn't happen with this one. Instead, in pitting the all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra against the bestselling Ford F-150, it came down to weighing the details. For example: One of these pickup trucks has a better engine, the other a better transmission. One has a better-looking interior; the other offers better functionality. Even the back seat factors into the equation: One has a better seat, the other smarter floor storage. We did manage to pick a winner, but only by the slimmest of margins. If you were to purchase the truck we deemed the lesser of the two, we certainly wouldn't say you bought the wrong one.But enough preamble, let's meet our players. For this particular test, we decided to sample workaday, lower-trim versions of these full-size trucks. Both featured crew cabs, short boxes, and four-wheel drive. Toyota sent along a 2022 Tundra Limited equipped with the TRD Off-Road package and a handful of other useful stand-alone options that added up to a $60,188 sticker. Ford supplied an F-150 XLT, the truck's one-up-from-the-bottom trim, which was priced at $58,575 and fitted with two key options—Ford's Max Trailer Tow package and the 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V-6. (The truck Ford sent was a 2021, but the 2022 F-150 is functionally identical.)Tundra vs. F-150: A Closer Look, Outside and InAt first glance, the Ford F-150 is the slightly better-looking truck in our eyes. It appears relaxed and sure of itself, whereas the Tundra is styled like it has something to prove. Although we appreciate the creases in its sheetmetal, we can't avert our gaze from the Tundra's giant, gaping grille, which reminds us of a jet plane missing its nose cone. Out back, the Tundra's vertical taillights don't seem to be as integrated into the truck's overall design. That said, when it comes to the details, the Toyota appears more modern, with sequential LED turn signals where the lower-spec Ford makes do with incandescent bulbs. It's controversial to be sure, but the Tundra is definitely a product of the new decade, while the new-for-2021 F-150 could be 10 years old.It's a similar story inside. The Tundra's interior is more modern in execution, with its massive 14.0-inch infotainment screen (optional), handsomely sculpted vents, and wide piano-key switches (a good idea lifted from General Motors). The F-150's stereo, A/C, and steering wheel controls, with their dials and plastic buttons, look old-fashioned by comparison, but they're arguably easier to use. The F-150's interior has its share of cheap plastics, though the bulk of its dashboard appears to be built of higher-quality materials than the Tundra employs. Even the upholstery is a draw: Some of our testers thought the F-150's two-tone cloth was way more attractive and comfortable than the Tundra's faux leather. Others said Toyota's Sof-Tex is more upscale and wondered what possessed Ford to put cloth seats in a $58,575 truck.Both trucks feature giant center touchscreen infotainment interfaces, but the Toyota's is gianter—and although that's great for Apple CarPlay, we were surprised the Tundra only lets you display one system (audio, phone, navigation, settings) at a time, whereas the Ford will show, say, your tunes and a map simultaneously.We found the back seats to be roomy in both the F-150 and the Tundra, with lots of legroom and easy access through big doors, and both offer two types of USB ports (A and C) and a 120-volt outlet. The Tundra has the (marginally) more comfortable seat, with a longer bottom cushion that provides better thigh support and a more relaxed backrest angle. But with the seat bottoms folded up, the F-150's flat floor and fold-away storage bins (a $215 option) made it far more useful and flexible than the Tundra, which has a sizable transmission hump and hard, fixed plastic binnacles.Tundra vs. F-150: The DriveBoth of our test trucks were powered by twin-turbo V-6 engines—a 3.5-liter unit for the F-150 and a 3.4 for the Tundra (though Toyota's sales literature says otherwise). Note, however, that the EcoBoost engine is a $2,595 option in the Ford; standard power is a 3.3-liter non-turbo V-6 with half as much torque. The Toyota, meanwhile, gets twin-turbo power as standard. (Both the Tundra and F-150 are available with an optional hybrid powertrain, but only Ford offers a V-8.)The F-150 provides a lot of go for the extra dough. Although its 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque bests the Toyota by only 11 hp and 21 lb-ft, the aluminum-bodied F-150 weighs a quarter-ton less than the Tundra. In addition, both come standard with a 3.31:1 rear axle, but our Ford test truck came with no-cost optional 3.55:1 gearing, which the Tundra doesn't offer. All of the above gave the F-150 a serious speed advantage: We clocked the Ford from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, which is almost a full second quicker than the Tundra. And Ford's EPA fuel economy numbers measure 1 mpg better in city, highway, and combined measurements. Out on the open road, the Ford felt like the more powerful truck, and it delivered slightly better fuel economy during our testing.But that doesn't necessarily mean the Ford's powertrain is a far superior choice. The 2022 Tundra's 10-speed automatic transmission proved to be the better actor, shifting up and down promptly and smoothly. On one narrow, hilly section of our test route, the Tundra knew intuitively which gear to pick; prodding the F-150's accelerator on the same stretch resulted in a delay and a lurch while it tried to find the right ratio.Tundra vs. F-150: Ride and HandlingThe suspension is one area where Ford pulled definitively ahead. Neither of these pickup trucks will ever be mistaken for an old-school Lincoln Town Car, but the F-150 provided a smoother ride, while the Tundra felt jittery even over moderate bumps. When the pavement got slightly worse, the Tundra's ride got a lot worse, deteriorating much more quickly than the F-150's ride quality. This was somewhat surprising, given the Toyota's rear coil springs and lower payload rating relative to the leaf-sprung Ford.The Ford's steering felt light and a bit numb, making the truck easy, if not exactly enjoyable, to maneuver. But it steered better than the Tundra, which felt less precise and wandered more on the highway. Both trucks have adaptive cruise control with lane centering, and although the Ford guided itself accurately, the Tundra had a harder time staying centered, an experience shared by its human drivers. Keep in mind that our test Tundra came with the $3,085 TRD Off-Road package featuring stiffer shocks and softer all-terrain tires. Without this package, the Toyota might well have had better ride and steering qualities.Tundra vs. F-150: Getting Into BedUnlike the F-150, the Tundra doesn't have a spray-in bedliner, but it doesn't need one: The Tundra's bed is a plastic composite, which is virtually indestructible. There's nothing wrong with a metal bed like the Ford's, but it's eventually going to show the dents and scars of hard use. That won't be the case with the Tundra. Both trucks have tie-downs in the bed walls; the Ford's are fixed, while the Tundra offers both fixed and movable points.Our Tundra test truck had a $385 power package that included 400-watt outlets in the bed and a Qi wireless phone charger in the cab, which our F-150 lacked. Ford offers 400-watt plugs for $290, but our truck came instead with the $995 ProPower Onboard package capable of 2,000 watts. The Toyota also had a retractable tailgate step, but evetesn with it deployed, our shorter testers faced a steep climb into the bed. Speaking of steep, that little step costs a whopping $399. Unlike the Toyota, our F-150 didn't come with any tailgate assistance features as equipped. Ford does offer a quality tailgate step of its own for the F-150, but it's only included as part of the $695 power tailgate package, which was missing from our truck. (Perhaps it was a good thing given what we discovered in our last full-size pickup comparison.)Tundra vs. F-150: Towing and HaulingIn terms of truck capabilities, Ford is the clear winner. Our Tundra, as equipped, had a maximum payload of 1,740 pounds and a towing capacity of 11,120 pounds. The Ford, meanwhile, offered a 2,100-pound payload capacity and, with its Max Trailering package, a towing capacity of 13,900 pounds. But even with a lesser trailering package, the F-150 would still out-tow the Tundra by 180 pounds. Capacity and skill are separate things, though. We've always found the F-150 to be a stable towing platform, and the Tundra proved just as competent at hauling our high-profile two-horse trailer.We're big fans of Ford's optional Pro Trailer Backup Assist system, and we were eager to try Toyota's version, called Straight Path Assist. The key difference between the two is that the F-150 allows the driver to steer the trailer in reverse with a dial on the dashboard, but the Tundra only keeps the trailer going straight. With Straight Path Assist, once you get the trailer pointed where you want it, you can let go of the wheel and the Tundra will steer itself in an attempt to keep the trailer going in the same direction. The Tundra did a pretty good job of keeping the trailer going straight, but really, that's only half the battle—getting the trailer pointed in the right direction is the real struggle for novice trailer-backers. Ford's system (as well as Ram's Trailer Reverse Steering) alleviates 95 percent of the anxiety of backing up a trailer; the Toyota, maybe 50 percent. We're baffled as to why Toyota didn't build a complete trailer-backing solution.Let's Pick a Winner Already!We suspected from our first test loop that this was going to be a close competition, and we weren't disappointed. Toyota clearly benchmarked the bestselling F-150 when developing its new Tundra, and it followed very closely in the Ford's tire tracks.But in the end, the Ford managed to stay out front, if only by a bumper length or two. The F-150 is the better and more comfortable truck to drive (though a Tundra with the non-TRD suspension might be able to close that gap). The Ford's interior is marginally nicer and easier to use, and the F-150's back seat, though not quite as comfortable as the Toyota's, offers more flexibility for carrying other-than-human cargo. We like the Tundra's tough composite bed, but the Ford carries a lot more cargo. Both trucks are competent tow vehicles, but the Ford has more capacity and a better trailer-backing system. And although the Tundra has more modern styling details, the F-150 has a look we think will age better—indeed, it already seems to be doing so.Toyota fans might be disappointed to learn that the new Tundra generation is short of class-leading; in our estimation, that title still belongs to the Ram 1500.
