We thought we spotted a Ford Maverick Tremor prototype a few weeks ago. It turns out the more rugged-looking Maverick we spied was indeed a Tremor, making it the fourth truck to get the off-road Tremor trim level, joining the Ranger, F-150, and Super Duty. Welcome to the family, baby Tremor. It's a good look.Want a Maverick with the Tremor package? You'll need to spring for a Maverick XLT or Lariat model equipped with the available 250-hp, 277-lb-ft 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine. That means—for now—the front-wheel-drive-only standard hybrid powertrain and entry-level XL trim cannot be combined with the Tremor, which Ford describes as "an entry-level option for buyers seeking greater off-road capability and bold styling." It's kind of like a souped-up FX4 Off-Road Package already offered on all-wheel-drive Mavericks. So, it's mostly entry-level.Visually, the Maverick Tremor wears a healthy dose of signature Tremor Orange accents, reminiscent of its F-150 brethren. The orange hue coats the tow hooks, fender vents, grille, and wheels. And of course the Tremor bedside logo is in Tremor Orange.Tremor logos are stitched into the Black Onyx seatbacks, which fittingly also have Tremor Orange stitching. There's a dose of non-orange customization in the form of a unique grille finish and blacked-out Ford logos, headlights and taillights.There's also a separate Tremor Appearance Package that includes a Carbonized gray roof and mirror caps. It also includes black side graphics on the hood and lower body.The 17-inch dark gray aluminum wheels are wrapped in 235/65R17 Wildpeak all-terrain tires, though you'll probably only notice the Tremor Orange on the inside pocket of one of the spokes. The speckle of orange almost gives the appearance of orange brake calipers when in motion.The Maverick Tremor gets "off-road tuned suspension with increased ride height" in the form of a 1-inch lift, with claimed "unique front and rear springs and shocks." We're not sure if this includes any of the mechanically similar Bronco Sport SUV's Badlands HOSS (High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension) system, or if Ford came up with new bits for the Maverick. Either way, the visual effect is a tougher Maverick.Paring nicely with the upgraded suspension are a tapered front bumper (for an improved approach angle of 10 degrees over the front-wheel drive Maverick Hybrid) and steel skid plates for undercarriage protection. There's also a heavy-duty transmission cooler and upgraded half-shafts.The Maverick Tremor gets five selectable drive modes, but the real story is Trail Control and the upgraded all-wheel-drive system complete with a torque-vectoring rear differential (think Bronco Sport Badlands), both of which the Maverick FX4 does not have. Trail Control is like off-road cruise control, where the driver sets the speed and steers while the truck controls throttle and braking to maintain a (slow) velocity. The torque-vectoring, also new to Maverick, includes a twin-clutch rear-drive unit with a differential lock that allows virtually all rear axle torque to go to either wheel.The 3,807-pound Maverick Tremor is, naturally, the heaviest of the Maverick clan. It can tow 2,000 pounds (indicating it's not offered with the 4K Tow Package, which ups the truck's total to 4,000 lbs) and has a payload rating of 1,200 pounds, 300 pounds less than the other Mavericks.The 2023 Ford Maverick Tremor Off-Road Package comes with $2,995 price tag, and the Tremor Appearance Package is $1,495. Ordering is available in September, with production beginning in fall.
California electric luxury vehicle manufacturer Lucid is launching a new performance subbrand called Sapphire. This might seem like an odd, even unnecessary move from a company that currently sells the Air Grand Touring Performance, a 1,050-hp sedan that runs the quarter mile in 10 seconds flat. But here we are. The first vehicle to fall under the Sapphire umbrella has three motors and will be known as—big surprise—the Air Sapphire.Lucid is being tight-lipped about the actual numbers, and things will undoubtedly change before the first Sapphire is delivered about 10 months from now, but here's what's being claimed: more than 1,200 horsepower, 0-60 mph in less than 2 seconds, 0-100 mph in less than 4 seconds, a sub-9-second quarter mile, and a top speed in excess of 200 mph. You read all that right. Gulp.How much above 1,200 horsepower are we talking? Seeing as how Lucid's already sold customers the 1,111-hp Air Dream Edition P, and the Sapphire has an extra motor, we're thinking much more than 1,200 horsepower. As stated, Lucid wouldn't give an exact figure; when pressed, chief engineer Eric Bach said the limiting factor in terms of output is the battery. After all, we know a single Lucid motor can produce up to 670 hp, and 670 times 3 is 2,010. However, even though the Air Sapphire has an "evolved" version of the brand's battery management software, it still cannot supply that much peak power. Bach also pointed out it's likely the number will continue to rise before the Air Sapphire is locked for production. If we had to guess the final number, 1,350 has a nice ring to it and makes some sense in the context of the performance claims. Alas, it's just a guess. Time will tell.Big Power—With Big RangeTime will also reveal what the Air Sapphire's range is. Lucid says it will still be "more than 400 miles" but less than the 446-mile range delivered by the Air Grand Touring Performance. Knowing the Tesla Model S Long Range is rated for 405 miles on a single charge, and knowing Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson the way we do, we can all but guarantee the Air Sapphire will beat the best Tesla has to offer. If Lucid's Sapphire claims are true, this thing would beat the Plaid in a straight line, too. In this case, 425 miles feels like a safe bet for range.Also, and although they're probably not to everyone's liking, the Air Sapphire comes with easy-to-install aero discs. These are wheel coverings—quite like what you see on the front wheels of the McLaren Speedtail—and vice president of design Derek Jenkins says they "add tens of miles of range." The idea is that you install them at your home, drive to the track, remove them, and then go tear up some pavement. We don't know whether the aero discs will be factored into the EPA's range rating.Adding a third motor obviously increases weight, although not as much as it could seeing as how a single motor weighs 163 pounds. However, the sapphire-blue-colored Megawatt Drive Unit (as Lucid is calling the dual-motor assembly that fits between the rear half shafts) weighs less than two motors on their own. The car's larger tires also add weight, as does the girthier body—the Air Sapphire's track grows by nearly an inch up front and almost 2 inches at the rear. That said, the wheels and carbon-ceramic brake calipers do shed a little. We'd guess, all in, the Air Sapphire will be 200 pounds heavier than a standard Air. (The Grand Touring Performance weighed 5,256 pounds on our scales.)Stopping PowerIf your head is still spinning from the claimed acceleration and top speed numbers, know that the brakes on the Air Sapphire are pretty special. Up front you'll find massive, 16.5-inch Lucid-branded and Akebono-developed carbon-ceramic rotors gripped by 10-piston calipers. The rears measure 15.4 inches in diameter and utilize four-piston calipers. Also, the brake rotors "use a woven continuous carbon fiber rather than the discontinuous [chopped] carbon fiber" featured on most carbon braked road cars. The major benefit of a continuous carbon-fiber weave is three times more heat conductivity. Which, for a 2.5-plus-ton car capable of cresting 200 mph, is critical.Lucid maintains that the Air Sapphire, as well as future Sapphire products, will be more than just a straight-line juggernaut. Rather, Sapphire vehicles will be fully developed performance cars. First and foremost, as the two motors that make up the Megawatt Drive aren't mechanically linked, the car has the capability to spin one motor (on the outside wheel) forward, while the other (inside wheel) begins regenerative braking. That latter part means the wheel effectively tries to spin backward, i.e., torque vectoring. Also, this next part is a little tricky, but let's say each rear motor makes on the order of 400 horsepower (to be clear, that's just a random figure, not an actual specification). When one motor goes into regen, the energy it was using is now free to flow into the forward-spinning motor, creating as much as 670 hp. Nuts, huh? Lucid claims this sort of two-motor torque vectoring is both quicker and more effective than rear-wheel steering.Special Rubber, Special SuspensionThe Air Sapphire comes on special Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires stamped with LM1 to signify Lucid Motors. Bach claims the unique compound is a special mix of low-rolling-resistance rubber and Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber. Sounds too good to be true, but here we are. The tires grow in width compared to those found on the GTP: 265/35-ZR20 front, and 295/30-ZR21 rear.The Air Sapphire's suspension is completely reworked, as well. Stiffer springs, stiffer bushings, new dampers, recalibrated anti-roll bars, reprogrammed stability and traction control, new power steering control, and new ABS logic are all part of the program. Sprint mode has been replaced with Sapphire mode, Lucid's equivalent of, say, Porsche's Sport Plus. Within Sapphire mode, there will be additional features such as a launch mode, a track mode, and maybe a time attack mode. The submodes are similar to how Rivian has different options within its Off-Road menu: All-Terrain, Rock Crawl, Drift, etc.Why Sapphire? Lucid explains that first and foremost it's a luxury brand. Sapphires are precious. Second, per international racing tradition, American cars are blue. (Think the Cobra Daytona Coupes at Le Mans in 1964.) Third, Lucid is a California car company, and the official state gem of California is … benitoite! Which would be a terrible name for anything. As it happens, people initially thought benitoite gems were sapphires because they are visually almost identical. So, Sapphire it is.As it happens, the Air Sapphire will only be available in Sapphire Blue. For now. We think. The car features a few more aerodynamic tricks than the standard Air, but it's hard to tell what they are from looking, especially as the Sapphire comes complete with Lucid's new Stealth treatment. The interior is basically the same, with added Sapphire Blue contrast stitching, as well as Alcantara-wrapped seats and steering wheel.How Much Is the Lucid Air Sapphire?How much is one of these? $249,000, says Lucid, about $70K more than an Air Grand Touring Performance. A small price to pay for the most powerful sedan in the world, no? Consider perhaps that a Bentley Flying Spur Mulliner W12 stickers for $309,000 and only makes a paltry 626 horsepower. When will you be able to purchase an Air Sapphire? Lucid says within days of reading this story and adds that deliveries are slated to start during the first half of 2023. I did not win the efficiency contest here in Immendingen, Germany, home of the sprawling Test Center of Mercedes-Benz even though I had a handicap: the supremely slippery Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX, a drivable concept car that can travel more than 1,200 km (745 miles) on a single charge.The problem was not the car, it was me. I could not help busting out of the recommended conservative driving habits to gun it when the speed limits on the handling course allowed, which hurt my score, as did the need for manual braking when a speed limit was momentarily exceeded, prompting a warning. The benchmark was 7.9 miles per kWh; I recorded only 6.4 kWh of average consumption over the 10-mile course. On the plus side, after each burst of acceleration, I used the most aggressive of the four settings for regenerative braking and racked up more than three times the extra energy and range of the benchmark driver.Which is to say, the beauty of the EQXX is that it can be fun, with a mighty torque pull, as well as efficient—I still recorded a single-digit consumption figure—so best of both worlds.And that is good because this Vision concept is the future of Mercedes EVs. The learnings and stylings will show up in new vehicles coming in 2025 and beyond from the new Mercedes Modular Architecture or MMA. The EQXX is a street-legal prototype and the only one of its kind in the world. At 110.2 inches, it is a compact car, roughly the same wheelbase as the Mercedes-Benz EQB.Its impressive range, beating the Lucid Air Grand Touring's 516 miles and the Tesla Model S Long Range at 405 miles per EPA, is attributable to a number of factors. The EQXX has a 100-kWH battery pack, similar to the one in the Mercedes-Benz EQS large sedan, but in the EQXX concept the unit is half the size and weighs 30 percent less, the cells are packaged differently and it has a carbon fiber top cover. The anodes use more silicon and hold more energy. While the rest of the Mercedes EV lineup have a 400-volt system, and some competitors have 800V, the EQXX system is more than 900V. Stumbling onto the Teardrop ShapeThe design team came up with the car's teardrop shape with the rear track two inches narrower than the front, a tapered cabin, and a long tail with an active diffuser which extends almost 8 inches. "We didn't set out to create this shape, we found it," Malte Sievers, project manager for the Vision EQXX tells us.The result: a claimed drag coefficient of 0.17—more streamlined than a football—making the EQXX the most efficient model Mercedes, or perhaps anyone, has built. It could become a car for the ages as 0.17 will be hard to beat, physics is physics, says Sievers. And this slippery missile could never be built if it had to accommodate an internal combustion engine. "The whole thing falls apart," he says. "It shows the capability EVs brings to the industry."Engineers say 62 percent of the EQXX's efficiency is from aerodynamics; meaning every change to aero affects everything else by 62 percent. You can make changes to rolling resistance, for example, but your efforts will never impact more than 20 percent of the total efficiency. And everything else amounts to an 18 percent impact. The team looked at every part to see if it was necessary and if so, how to make it light, efficient, and not heat up. The cooling plate underneath allows the car to be cooled by airflow and the overall efficiency means there is little to cool.The summation of all the engineering efforts is a car where 95 percent of the energy sent from the battery makes its way to the wheels. For reference, the EQS sends 90 percent of its energy to the wheel well, which means the team had to make the EQXX twice as efficient.First Outsiders to Drive the Mercedes-Benz EQXXWe were part of a media program that let non-Mercedes people drive the Vision EQXX for the first time. To date, only Mercedes employees have put it through its paces. That includes two road trips, the first April 5 from Singelfingen, Germany, to Cassis in northern Italy, 1,008 km (626 miles) and using 8.7 kWh/100 km or 7.1 miles per kWh, with 140 km (87 miles) left at the finish. The second run, June 21-22, was from Stuttgart to Silverstone in France, a distance of 1,202 km (747 miles) in summer heat requiring the air conditioning to run for 11 hours. Average consumption was 8.3 kWh/100 km or 7.5 miles/kWh, and it included 11 laps on the track when the car reached Silverstone to empty the remaining energy.To work out the bugs, the team created a test mule by squeezing a 100-kW battery, DC/DC converter and DC charging controls, battery management system, other aspects of the EQXX powertrain, as well as testing equipment, into a Mercedes-Benz EQB. The mule is known as EMMA (the MMA for Mercedes Modular Architecture). EMMA made the Sindelfingen to Cassis trip first in a test run with its share of breakdowns, a learning curve that proved to be a total success as the EQXX did not have a single mishap in either of its long-distance tests.We drove EMMA, who was a little clunky as the suspension was not adapted for the weighty equipment added or the fact that most of it bears down on the rear axle, throwing off the balance.Then we hopped in the EQXX which was much quieter, balanced, nimble, and downright supple by comparison, riding on Ultralight 20-inch forged magnesium wheels with Bridgestone Turanza tires that are also lightweight and have ultra-low-rolling resistance. The car cornered nice and flat, the suspension was not challenged by the course, but neither did it stumble.Impressive Regenerative BrakingBoth cars have one-pedal driving with four degrees of regenerative braking—mild, two aggressive settings, and the option to have no reclamation at all, which works infinitely better on the EQXX. On one long straight in EMMA, we turned off regen and saw our speed drop about 9 mph within seconds. In the EQXX the speed never dropped at all.Manual braking was harsher in EMMA, it was less grabby in the EQXX, but engineers wince if a foot ever touched that pedal because it means energy is being lost. We used the most aggressive regen setting for most of the EQXX drive; it was highly effective without being too harsh.There is a satisfying weight to the EQXX's steering and the vehicle is not flighty at all. Input and response are nicely married. Acceleration on the 21-minute lap was not neck-snapping but the car picked up speed quicky and smoothly. It was easy to exceed the course's varying speed limits that were being closely monitored.The big takeaway is that it felt like a production model more so than a concept.Attempting the ImpossibleThe EQXX prototype was pulled together in 18 months, a project launched with a request in June 2020 from the board of management to build an electric vehicle capable of driving 1,000 km (621 miles) on a single charge. Almost all the teams involved worked to achieve the seemingly impossible target of 10 kWh/100 km, Sievers said. The car relied on expertise from Mercedes' Formula 1 and Formula E race engineering groups as well as the research department and production development team.There are 117 heavy solar panels on the roof that send energy into a 12V system that powers many of the car's ancillaries which equates to a roughly 25-km (15-mile) bump in range. Engineers say the energy gains from the panels are greater than the losses due to the extra weight.You cannot see out the glass of the back window; nor are there cameras for the rearview mirror—they would consume too much energy.It all adds up to a highly efficient EQXX that exceeded the mandate.Loving the Luxury InteriorThe beautiful navy and white interior of the EQXX is serene and modern without looking too sci-fi or clinically cold, with sustainable vegan materials that look high end. There are 47.5 inches of curved OLED screen, perfect for using the real-time 3D navigation display—but only when absolutely necessary. The mini LEDs that backlight and dim the screen make for crackling crisp graphics. Dimming zones save power by not illuminating the parts of the screen not in use; there is zero energy consumption when the LEDs shut themselves off.Mercedes provides eco guidance. The car knows the route conditions of the trip programmed into the nav system and tells the driver to speed up or slow down to be more efficient. The driver can look at data to show energy usage, solar energy produced, air pressure and wind direction, and forecast how much energy the trip will require. Almost ready for production is an Intelligent Avator to suggest movies to watch or restaurants to stop at, saving the driver from scrolling through menus on the screen and using energy.They are tools I clearly need. Said the engineer who tried to keep a straight face as he analyzed the data spikes in my EQXX run: "I think you had fun."
