  • Appealing passenger space for its size
  • Plenty of features for the price

  • Ride quality is choppy on the freeway
  • Slow acceleration from the underpowered engine
  • Less cargo space than some rivals
  • Fuel economy falls short for the class

  • New 1.4-liter turbocharged engine offers more power than before
  • Flat-folding front passenger seat is no longer offered
  • Part of the first Trax generation introduced for 2015

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax is an extra-small crossover SUV that's the smallest — but not the most affordable vehicle — in Chevrolet's lineup. The price advantage goes to the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which is also an extra-small SUV. It's also a lot newer and, well, better.

The Trax came out for the 2015 model year and hasn't gotten a full redesign since. This year's Trax does get an upgraded engine that makes 155 horsepower, which is a bit more than last year's 138 hp. Unfortunately, 155 hp still isn't a whole lot, even by the standards of this pint-sized class, and the Trax also suffers from a choppy ride and a lack of cargo space. Overall, we think you'll be better off with the Trailblazer or other solid picks such as the Hyundai Kona, Kia Soul or Mazda CX-30.

Which Trax does MatoCar recommend?

The LS trim offers a reasonable number of features, but we suggest stepping up to the LT trim with the Driver Confidence and LT Convenience packages, both of which are only available on the Trax LT.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax is available in just two trim levels: LS and LT. For 2022, all Trax are powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine (155 horsepower, 177 lb-ft). It's paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional on both trims.

LS Starts you off with:

  • 7-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
  • Wi-Fi hotspot capability
  • Six-speaker sound system
  • 60/40-split folding rear seat

LT Includes the LS's standard features and adds:

  • Cruise control
  • Upgraded seating surfaces
  • LED running lights
  • Roof rails
  • Heated outside mirrors

Optional features for the LT include:

  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Keyless ignition and entry
  • Power-adjustable driver's seat
  • Faux leather upholstery with heated front seats
