  • Impressive number of features for your money
  • For its size, easy to get into and out of
  • Simple control layout

  • All-wheel drive is unavailable
  • One of the smaller extra-small SUVs in the class

  • Minor changes to standard feature availability
  • Limited trim replaces Denim trim
  • Part of the first Venue generation introduced for 2020

Once upon a time, cash-strapped car buyers who were sick and tired of paying to repair their old, broken-down used car would instead choose to make monthly payments on a shiny new economy car. Today, extra-small crossover SUVs like the 2022 Hyundai Venue fill this role. And when it comes to the 2022 Venue, it does so with a level of style, utility and technology unheard of in the past.

Equipped with just enough power to accelerate out of its own way, but not available with an all-wheel-drive system that would make it a legit SUV, the Venue is actually more of a four-door hatchback than anything else. But the Hyundai Venue offers plenty of value by way of its pleasing amount of features and excellent warranty and free scheduled maintenance program. Plus, like other Hyundai models, the Venue is genuinely stylish and feels like a quality piece of engineering.

The Venue makes a compelling case for itself among other low-priced SUVs such as the Nissan Kicks and Toyota C-HR. Check out our test team's Expert Rating for a detailed review of the Venue's performance, comfort and more.

Which Venue does MatoCar recommend?

The Hyundai Venue's middle SEL trim level offers the best blend of equipment and value. It has some desirable extras over the base SE, including 17-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof and additional driver assist features.

Anchoring the Hyundai SUV lineup as the most affordable choice in the stable, the 2022 Venue comes in SE, SEL and Limited trim levels. All Venues have a 121-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is not available. Equipment highlights are as follows:

SE Starts off the Venue lineup with:

  • 15-inch alloy wheels
  • Automatic headlights
  • Height-adjustable driver's seat
  • 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks
  • 8-inch touchscreen display
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • Four-speaker sound system
  • Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
  • Lane departure mitigation (warns you of a lane departure when a turn signal isn't used and can automatically steer to maintain lane position)
  • Driver attention warning (issues an alert if sensors determine you are becoming fatigued)

SEL The midlevel SEL includes the SE equipment plus:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Rear disc brakes (can improve stopping capability)
  • Roof rails
  • Sunroof
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
  • Center storage box with sliding armrest
  • Automatic climate control
  • Additional USB port
  • Six-speaker audio system
  • Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)

Limited Comes fully loaded thanks to:

  • LED headlights
  • Heated side mirrors
  • Heated front seats
  • Keyless entry and push-button start
  • Navigation system
