If you're shopping for a new Toyota Camry, the hybrid is the one to get unless you need all-wheel drive or you can't live without the midsize sedan's available V6 engine.
The 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid does cost a couple grand more than an equivalent straight gasoline four-cylinder model, but with a fuel economy rating of 46 mpg combined (52 mpg with the LE trim), you'll make that back at the gas pump before you make your last loan payment. Plus, with its combined 208 horsepower and instant torque from its electric assist motor, the Camry Hybrid suffers no performance penalty in exchange for its thrifty efficiency.
This year, Toyota adds a new SE Nightshade Edition with blacked-out exterior trim and unique 18-inch aluminum wheels with a black finish. It gives the fuel-efficient family sedan a racy appearance at an appealing price. Otherwise, the car is largely unchanged. Be sure to read our Expert Rating of the Camry Hybrid to learn more.
Which Camry Hybrid does MatoCar recommend?
When choosing a new Camry Hybrid, you first decide if you want a sporty look and feel. If that's what you seek, the SE, SE Nightshade Edition or XSE is your best bet. However, if you're most concerned about maximizing fuel economy, the LE is our recommendation. It's not an exciting car, but the EPA says it will get 52 mpg in combined driving and you can add every factory option without breaking into the mid-$30,000 range.Toyota offers the 2022 Camry Hybrid in base LE, upscale XLE, sporty SE, sportier SE Nightshade Edition and sportiest XSE trim levels.
