Maserati Quattroporte Trofeo 2021 Review

The 2021 Maserati Quattroporte is a large luxury sedan that has served as the Italian automaker's flagship four-door model for decades. It's big, well appointed and — as you might expect from a car hailing from Italy — fast. That speed is brought to you thanks to a pair of turbocharged engines and relatively sporty suspension and handling. That's not to say it's all about speed with the Quattroporte. All Quattroportes are loaded with features and offer handsome and feature-rich cabins with plenty of space for people and cargo. It's getting a bit long in the tooth, but a number of rolling updates have kept it from feeling too stale.

For 2021, the Quattroporte gets a new, more powerful trim level: the Trofeo. The Trofeo model replaces the GTS in the Quattroporte lineup. Besides a bump in power, the Trofeo includes a sport-tuned suspension, performance brakes and tires, and a number of styling tweaks that help it stand out in a crowd.

And it is a crowded field. The Quattroporte is an alternative to the solid but somewhat ubiquitous lineup of large German luxury sedans. Rivals include the Porsche Panamera; the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and AMG GT sedan; the BMW 7 Series, Alpina B7 and 8 Series Gran Coupe; and the Audi A7 and A8. While the Quattroporte lacks the polish and some advanced features found in its German rivals, it has a flair that's hard to replicate elsewhere. It might not stand toe-to-toe with the competition on paper, but it's hard to put a price on personality.

Which Quattroporte does MatoCar recommend?

The 2021 Maserati Quattroporte is available in two main trim levels: S and the new Trofeo trim. The S is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 (424 horsepower, 428 lb-ft of torque) paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. It's also available with all-wheel drive as the S Q4. The Quattroporte Trofeo uses a 3.8-liter turbocharged V8 (580 hp, 538 lb-ft) that makes more power than last year's V8-powered GTS model. All-wheel drive is not available on the Trofeo.

S The Quattroporte S is available in three forms: S, S GranLusso and S GranSport. The luxury-oriented GranLusso and stylish GranSport models are basically upgrade packages for the standard model. All-wheel drive is available on all three. Features on the S include:

• Parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking)
• Adaptive cruise control (maintains a driver-set distance between the Quattroporte and the car in front)
• Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the Quattroporte and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
• Automatic emergency braking (warns if a front impact is imminent and applies the brakes if you don't respond in time)

The GranLusso package includes all basic S features, adding:

• 20-inch wheels
• Upgraded leather upholstery
• Heated and ventilated front seats
• Revised exterior trim
• Power-adjustable pedals

The GranSport package builds off the base S with:

• 20-inch wheels
• Revised front and rear fascias

Trofeo The high-performance Trofeo model comes with a V8 engine. It includes most standard features from the Quattroporte S. Upgrades and changes include:
