  • Easy-to-use tech interface
  • Strong turbocharged V6 has ample power for towing
  • Plenty of standard and optional advanced driver aids

  • Limited off-road capability
  • Too large for some garages

  • Revised front and rear exterior styling
  • New hands-free driving system
  • Larger 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Available ventilated and massaging seats for second row
  • Part of the fourth Navigator generation introduced for 2018

When Lincoln released the redesigned Navigator in 2018, it quickly shot to the top of our rankings of the Best Large Luxury SUVs. Its reign at the top eventually ended with the arrival of the redesigned Mercedes-Benz GLS, but the Navigator is still one of the best choices in the class. Now Lincoln has its eyes on the prize once again with its updated 2022 Navigator.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator isn't a completely new vehicle, but it does have significant tweaks and additions to make it more appealing than last year's model. Among these improvements is the first implementation of Lincoln's ActiveGlide, which is a limited hands-free driving system. There's also a road-sensing camera that communicates information to the suspension to produce a smoother ride.

Many of the 2022 updates are for the Navigator's rear passengers. The second-row seats are now ventilated and can now be outfitted with a massaging function. That fully digital control module is new and allows rear passengers to adjust their seats and the climate system. The rear entertainment system is also upgraded with Amazon Fire TV compatibility, so those in the back can stream (or download ahead of time) their favorite shows and movies. Front occupants will enjoy a larger central touchscreen.

This current Navigator is so impressive that we don't shy away from comparing it to more expensive SUVs from Mercedes-Benz or BMW. Then there's the Navigator's longtime rival, the Escalade. It was redesigned for the 2021 model year and boasts improved comfort and new technology features. With the recent updates to both domestic luxury SUVs, they are more closely matched than ever. Which should you choose? Take a look at our Expert Rating to learn more about the Navigator and get our in-depth evaluation.

The base Navigator is hard to pass up, but we think a handful of features on the Reserve make it worth the extra money. For example, the new ActiveGlide driving system and surround-view parking camera system are very useful add-ons. You also get a nice panoramic sunroof standard on this trim level. Finally, if you plan on towing often, the Reserve trim also unlocks the Navigator's maximum towing capacity via the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package.

The Lincoln Navigator is available in three trims levels: Base, Reserve and Black Label. Each is powered by a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 (450 horsepower, 510 lb-ft of torque) and comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

All Navigator trims can be had as long-wheelbase, or L, models. They add almost 12 inches of length, expand cargo capacity, and increase fuel tank capacity from 23 to 27 gallons. Both versions seat eight passengers, or seven with the optional second-row captain's chairs.

Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional on most trims. Highlighted features include:

Base Comes very well equipped with:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Power running boards
  • Adaptive LED headlights
  • Hands-free liftgate
  • Adaptive suspension (can adjust to improve comfort and handling stability)
  • 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration (with wireless connectivity)
  • Digital gauge cluster display
  • 14-speaker sound system
  • Heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated and ventilated second-row seats
  • Power-folding second- and third-row seats

Every Navigator also comes with these safety features:

  • Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
  • Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while reversing)
  • Lane keeping system (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
  • Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the Navigator and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
  • Adaptive cruise control (maintains a driver-set distance between the Navigator and the car in front)
  • Evasive steering assist (enhances the forward collision mitigation system with steering-based collision avoidance

Reserve Adds features such as:

  • 22-inch wheels
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Illuminated power running boards
  • Upgraded 24-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Upgraded leather upholstery
  • Lincoln's ActiveGlide driving system (combines adaptive cruise control with an advanced lane-centering system to provide hands-free driving capability on select highways)
  • Head-up display (displays important information in your sight line onto the windshield)

The Reserve trim level also unlocks two main option packages (both come standard on the Black Label trim):

Luxury package Adds more luxury features, including:

  • 30-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Upgraded audio system with 28 speakers

Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package Ensures maximum towing capability and convenience with:

  • Class IV hitch with trailer pin connectors
  • Low-range gearing if all-wheel drive is selected
  • Trailer backup assist (aids in positioning the Navigator's hitch close to the trailer)
  • Trailer brake controller (allows for remote adjustability of the trailer's brakes)
  • Trailer sway control (helps mitigate sway caused by high crosswinds)

Black Label Tops the range, adding features such as:

  • Contents of the Luxury package
  • Special 22-inch wheels
  • All-wheel drive
  • Curated interior color and trim packages
  • Extended maintenance plan
  • Complimentary car washes
  • Pickup and delivery of your vehicle for routine service with a free loaner vehicle
  • Optional Special Edition package (black exterior trim elements and unique wheels)
