These days you won't find many SUVs with true go-anywhere credentials, but the Lexus GX 460 is one happy exception. With its body-on-frame construction and full-time four-wheel-drive system with low-range gears, the Lexus GX can handle just about any terrain you can throw at it.

Although having off-roading chops is a plus in our book, you need more than that to succeed as a luxury SUV. The GX lacks the on-road refinement of more modern competitors like the Land Rover Discovery and Mercedes-Benz GLE, and its V8 engine is thirsty and underpowered. Another major shortcoming is its inadequate cargo area (particularly when the third-row seats are in place). But if you're looking for a rig that will pamper you on the trails, the Lexus GX 460 could be for you. Learn more about the 2022 GX 460's pros and cons by reading our test team's Expert Rating.

The top-of-the-line GX 460 Luxury trim is your best bet. It offers a smoother ride thanks to an adaptive air suspension all while doubling down on all-terrain capability through the available off-road package.

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 is a three-row luxury SUV that's available in three trim levels: base, Premium and Luxury. Each one is powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine (301 horsepower, 329 lb-ft of torque) paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. Feature highlights include:

Base Comes reasonably well equipped with:

  • Seating for up to seven passengers
  • LED headlights
  • Lexus' Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (enhances off-road performance)
  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • Simulated leather upholstery
  • 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • Lexus' Enform communications system
  • Integrated navigation system
  • Amazon Alexa integration
  • Driver aids
    • Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
    • Lane departure alert (alerts you if the vehicle begins to drift out of its lane)
    • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front)
    • Parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking)

Premium The midtier Premium trim includes all of the base model features and adds:

  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated outboard second-row seats
  • LED foglights
  • Automatic windshield wipers

Options on the Premium trim include:

  • Second-row captain's seats
  • 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system

Luxury The top-grade Luxury trim builds off the Premium trim, adding:

  • Upgraded leather upholstery
  • Power-folding third row

The second-row captain's seats and Mark Levinson audio system are optional for the Luxury trim as well. Other options include:
