So, the New Ford Bronco Raptor Is Here—Where's Its V-8 Engine?
Ever since spy shots of the flare-fendered, camouflaged 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor started hitting the airwaves, the internet has been buzzing as to whether it would be powered by an EcoBoost V-6 (and if so, which one?) or a Coyote V-8. Folks were clearly crossing their fingers for the latter, to relive those Bill Stroppe Baja fantasies. Now that the Bronco Raptor has dropped, we know we're getting the 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost six, and hearing the reasons why, we don't begrudge the decision. So read on for the answer to "Why no Bronco V-8?" and to learn how you will be able to buy a Bronco V-8 from Ford—sort of.
Just Not a Good Fit
As we've noted extensively, the Bronco is based on next-generation Ranger architecture, which involves a noticeably narrower frame than the one used by the F-150. Further tightening the engine compartment are shock towers that are elevated to provide the added suspension travel crucial to the Bronco Raptor's desert-blitzing capabilities. These taller towers prevent turbos and cylinder heads from being able to hang over the main frame rails. Such package constraints conspire against fitting a V-8 or even the wider 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 in a Bronco Raptor engine bay.
So when some aftermarket tuner comes along with an Bronco V-8 transplant, inevitably wearing Poppy Red, white, and blue livery, you'll likely learn that that specific Bronco didn't start life as a Raptor (and you may rightly fret about its cooling performance and durability).
Nose Heavy?
Extra weight on the nose of a desert racer is never a good thing. It overworks the springs and dampers, causes the front end to plow, adds wear to the front tires, and more. And although the overall weight of the Coyote V-8 isn't that much different from that of the EcoBoost V-6 engines (turbos weigh more than pistons!), the V-8 is longer, moving the engine's center of mass forward. This would have the effect of adding weight to the nose of a Bronco V-8.
Out of Character
This most extreme example of the "Born Wild" Bronco cries out for the broad, flat torque curve that comes with a twin-turbo engine. Naturally aspirated V-8s can't typically match this torque-everywhere character that a twin-turbo EcoBoost engine provides. And in any case, if our estimates of power and weight are correct, the Bronco Raptor should roughly hit the weight-to-power and hence 0-60-mph acceleration of the similarly tired Ford F-150 Raptor 37.
You CAN Have a Bronco V-8!
Wait, what? That's right, Ford is building a Bronco with a V-8. You simply won't be able to drive it to your local cars and coffee, or on public roads in general, but maybe you could live out your Stroppe fantasies and win the SCORE Baja 1000 race in it. We're talking about the 2023 Ford Bronco DR, a not-street-legal off-road-racing Bronco available to privateer racers.
Buy one of these, and you'd also be living out a "Rod Hall and Larry Minor" fantasy—they won the Baja 1000 overall in a stock Bronco V-8 in 1969. This tube-frame racing truck faces none of packaging dilemmas that plague the production truck, so it will run a V-8. It'll also package the radiator behind the driver. Oh, and it'll cost in the mid-$200,000s when it goes on sale this fall. How badly do you want a Bronco V-8?

The Russian incursion into Ukraine this week has thrown European and global markets into a frenzy, as automakers work to determine how big an impact the war, and any economic sanctions against aggressor Russia, will have on supply lines, production, and workforces who could now be in direct danger. Europe's home automakers will be hit the hardest, as supply lines from Ukraine and Russia freeze up while bombs get dropped. However, Hyundai and Kia's massive manufacturing presence in Russia now presents a huge headache for the Korean group, as well.Multiple global automakers have reportedly halted shipments of local dealer orders to Russian partners, effective February 24, the date of the Russian invasion, according to letters apparently sent from the automakers and viewed by the Russian-language business paper Vedomosti. Russian dealers for Audi and Chevrolet reportedly received notices, and Vedomosti claims VW and Skoda are prepping notices of their own. Porsche and Land Rover's Tata Group had also halted shipments starting the date of the Russian invasion. If this is all true, and it likely is, it's unclear exactly what conditions forced the shut down—but it probably isn't going to be easy getting your car through Russian customs right now.The report says Audi will inform its partners on its plans to resume shipments down the road. Any inventory from automakers that's already passed through Russian customs will still be delivered. The quick move to halt shipments to Russia on the part of most automakers is likely precautionary and temporary, and more to do with establishing new logistics options adapted to an environment now at war, and in the environment of new global sanctions against Russia. Companies obviously face public pressure to not appear too cozy with a current aggressor, so the shipment freeze is likely an indefinite delay until everybody calms down.If you're wondering if the U.S. government and its allies' sanctions against Russia will further exacerbate the ongoing semiconductor shortage, the answer is of course. While no semiconductors or raw materials used to make them will be flowing into Russia, much of the raw materials come from Ukraine, which probably won't be exporting them for a while.Hyundai + Kia In RussiaThe Korean automotive sector is hugely reliant on Ukrainian-provided rare gases like neon, krypton, xenon, and more, everything from EV battery cells to superconductors are now on an even tighter supply line, and prices will go up. And speaking of gas, the kind you use to fill up your car at the pump likely will get more expensive in the coming weeks as energy prices rise globally, especially if European nations abstain from Russian fuels in response to its attack on Ukraine.Hyundai Group, which Kia also operates through, first established itself with a factory in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2010 and recently purchased a former General Motors facility to renovate for Hyundai Tucson, Palisade, and Kia Sportage production for export to North America and the rest of Europe this year. The automakers combined currently produce more than 230,000 cars annually in Russia.That's just what they build there—Hyundai Group sold 373,132 vehicles in the Russian market in 2021, holding the largest market share; Hyundai accounts for 10.3 percent and Kia 12.3 percent of Russia's total vehicle market share.The outbreak of war and the onslaught of economic and financial sanctions against Russia now put all of Hyundai and Kia global business in jeopardy and will severely damage the national Korean economy, as well. The Korea Times says "Korean conglomerates" sold $2.5 billion worth of cars to Russia in 2021, plus an additional $1.45 billion worth of car parts and components.Cars and their parts previously accounted for 44 percent of Korea's annual export volume to Russia, which will likely be severely hindered by American and European sanctions looking to cut trade and handicap Russia's economy.Kia takes home four prizes at the annual Russian Car of the Year awardsHyundai + Kia in UkraineHyundai also operates a local sales office in Kyiv, Ukraine, and Kia produces the Rio sedan and hatchback at the ZAZ factory in Zaporozhye, Ukraine. On January 28, 2022, the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced a state of emergency in the region and established plans to evacuate Korean nationals out of Ukraine, the Korea Times reports.Hankook Tires, another Korean company, evacuated its sales office in the country. An official from Hyundai offered that the company has "been closely monitoring the situation as the Russian-Ukraine crisis is expected to bring about an economic slump and weak ruble," in a statement to the Korea Herald.The war in Ukraine could also severely impact global EV battery cell production, as the nation is the world's third-largest producer of nickel and aluminum, two highly valuable resources necessary in battery and EV components. Additionally, Ukraine produces almost 70 percent of the world's neon gas needed for components like chips, which are already suffering a shortage that has driven the average new vehicle transaction price in the U.S. to unbelievable new heights. It will likely only grow higher this year.Ukraine is also a critical global supplier of rare gases used in all sorts of high-tech equipment and components, and the war will severely hinder those supplies and likely cause prices to rise. This, too, will have a specific impact on the Korean economy, as the nation imports 30.7 percent of its krypton, 23 percent of its neon, and 17.8 percent of its xenon rare gases for component production from Ukraine, according to the Korea Herald. South Korean-based automaker SsangYong also imports raw materials like aluminum from the region.The Korean Automotive Manufacturer's Association fears up to 29 percent of its group sales could drop this year, anticipating a similar impact to when it witnessed a 62 percent drop in auto exports after the Russian incursion in Crimea in 2014, which also brought about international sanctions against Russia.New Sanctions on RussiaIn response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. Treasury Department announced it would immediately target the core infrastructure of Russian financial and some economic institutions. Sanctions target banks such as the state-backed Sberbank, VTB Bank, Otkritie, Sovcombank and Novikombank. The move is meant to ban any trading with U.S. institutions and freeze any U.S. assets held by the companies and their executives.This first wave of sanctions from the U.S. and its allies, announced on February 24, did not specifically target Russia's auto sector or any enterprises directly involved. However, some major economic enterprises related to autos were targeted, including Russia's Sovcomflot shipping company and Russian Railways, as well as much of the Russian energy sector.Russia is currently the third-largest supplier of nickel in the world and provides 40 percent of global palladium resources used for manufacturing catalytic converters, according to NBC. In return, Russia also relies on foreign supply lines for as much as 25 percent of its home automotive production, which could be heavily sequestered by new sanctions. The Russian Gaz Group has already announced that it will have to halt production as sanctions are levied against Russia.Analyst Sam Abuelsamid from Guidehouse Insights told NBC the big question regarding sanctions comes down to China: "If we put heavy sanctions on Russia, they might respond and cut us off from many of the things we need," including circuit boards and other raw materials, such as the lithium needed for electric vehicles. However, following the first wave of sanctions, this may not be a serious risk.J.D. Power and LMC Automotive analysts have downgraded projected global light vehicle production this year to 85.8 million units for 2022, a cut of 400,000 vehicles this year, Reuters says. However, the overall global volume of light vehicle sales is still expected to rise by 5 percent.Renault + Stellantis + Toyota Have Russia Trouble, TooOther major global automakers, including Renault and its affiliate brands, Stellantis and its affiliates, and Toyota, also have a significant manufacturing presence in the region. Renault has already announced that production in its Moscow, Russia, facility would have to stop from February 28 to March 5, citing "tighter border controls in transit countries and the forced need to change a number of established logistics routes," but failing to mention the Russian invasion of Ukraine outright, according to Reuters.Renault Group makes 8 percent of its core earnings in Russia, the automaker's second-largest market after its home of France. Russia's top automaker, AvtoVAZ, is partially owned by Renault, as well.Stellantis operates a car factory in Kaluga, Russia, where it also manufactures Mitsubishi models. Production of Peugeot, Citroën, and Opel cars reportedly doubled in Kaluga in 2021, and overall sales for Stellantis in Russia grew by 65 percent. There were plans earlier this year to start exporting commercial vehicles from the factory, which have now been interrupted.Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares commented on the situation on a conference call earlier this week: "If we cannot supply the plant, if that is the reality, we have either to transfer that production to other plants, or just limit ourselves," via NBC. The factory only exported about 11,000 commercial vehicles last year, a fraction of more than 2 million total light commercial vehicles the company sold.A Stellantis spokesperson told MotorTrend that the company is "monitoring the situation carefully in real time, and if necessary we will take appropriate measures in the interest of our employees and their families. We currently see no significant impact on our business operations, including our manufacturing plant."Considering the light amount of commercial exports from the Kaluga factory, it's more likely Stellantis' local Russian operation takes the bigger hit, though broader supply chain issues will still negatively impact the global Stellantis portfolio.Toyota has been building the Camry in Russia for decades and has a
UPDATE 3/4/22: "The Batman" is now in theaters, racking up a respectable 85 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and appearing to be on a trajectory to cash in at the box office. But, for our purposes, the star of the movie isn't Robert Pattinson—its the muscular Batmobile, with its mid-mounted engine and an overall vibe that wouldn't be too out of place in a Mad Max film. And, like any good Batmobile, it seems to be a central part of the film, speeding through a Gotham City that's as dark and moody as ever, launching baddies' vehicles into the air to land with an explosive thud. Whet your appetite with a longer, more recent trailer below. "The Batman" opens today in theaters, and will hit the HBO Max streaming service in mid-April. The Batman director Matt Reeves just revealed the new Batmobile on Twitter, and it's a definite departure from past movie cars. The movie press had earlier heard rumors that the new Batmobile would be more of a muscle car than the military-inspired Tumbler that appeared in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight film trilogy. That is exactly what we have here, although the mid-mounted engine is a bit of a surprise.What we can see resembles a lot of different classic muscle cars, and that's probably intentional. The deeply recessed front headlamps have a generic late 1960s look to them: a bit of Mopar, a bit of Mustang, maybe even a hint of De Tomaso Mangusta. Extremely swoopy rear fenders with pointed trailing ends that hang over three-element taillights are the closest thing we get to a traditional Batmobile motif. The rear tubes of a roll cage poke through the C-pillars and trailing edges of the roof. It is likely completely custom bodywork over a tube frame or donor chassis, so there's probably not a single recognizable base underpinning this creation.The longitudinally-mounted engine aft of the cabin is an enigma, but an awesome one. It appears to be a V-10—an OHV unit—with a couple of immense turbochargers that dump straight into the atmosphere behind the roof. If the movie magic gods are kind, it'll spit two tongues of delicious fire with every throttle blip. This Batmobile will be neither inconspicuous or quiet. There's obviously some extraneous fantasy bits tacked on to make it look more futuristic, but it seems like a real motor under there.Remember, there are usually several movie cars built for various purposes: stunt cars that can take a jump without disintegrating, "hero" cars that look good in close-ups, a rig that makes it look like our new Batman (Robert Pattinson—yes, that guy, from the sparkly vampire movies) is actually driving it even though it's grafted to the front of some other vehicle. This is probably a "hero" car, so the wild-looking engine might not be what motivates the running/driving ones.Even so, the Mad Max meets Fast and Furious vibe this new Batmobile gives off is a solid hint that this will be a movie that appeals to car enthusiasts on a deeper level. This reboot, the umpteenth since the 1989 Tim Burton movie, focuses on a more youthful Bruce Wayne/Batman with a greater focus on his detective work. There's surely going to be a lot of fighting, and given the unique direction that this Batmobile's design takes, we hope that there will be a lot of driving, too.Update: This post, which originally published on March 4, 2020, has been updated with the latest trailer for "The Batman".
hyundai sonata Full OverviewWhen we first took stock of our 2020 Hyundai Sonata Limited, we were impressed by its slick screens, comfortable leather seats, and stylish exterior. A year later, does the Sonata continue to charm, or has it lost its luster?The midsize sedan rolled into our garage wearing a striking sapphire blue paint color and all the trimmings of the top-tier Limited model. At $34,630, our test car looks almost like a luxury sedan. Its plush caramel leather seats held up well over a year of passengers shuffling into seats, loading and unloading tons of baby gear, car seats installations, and baby spit-ups. The leather didn't pucker over time like it did on one of my previous long-term vehicles, which happened to be a luxury vehicle.The Sonata's interior earned high praise for its uncluttered, elegant design. I enjoyed the easy-to-use 10.3-inch touchscreen, though I didn't fully appreciate how crisp it was until I downgraded to a duller 8.0-inch screen in my latest test car. The Sonata's infotainment screen complements the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a sharp Bose sound system sweetens the deal.Passengers enjoyed the panoramic sunroof, but my favorite feature is Highway Driving Assist. A semi-autonomous system that combines adaptive cruise control and lane centering tech, this feature makes highway commuting less stressful. Although it has a tendency to steer the Sonata to the left side of the lane within the lane markings, it works better than some other systems we've tested. The 360-degree camera system is another winner, providing a clear view on all sides of the car and making it easy to park this long sedan. The only real tech hiccup we encountered was with the keyless entry system. It often wouldn't register when I touched the door and had the key in my pocket, forcing me to dig out the key and press the unlock button.I had no illusions about the Sonata's performance going into the year. Our car features the Sonata's upgraded engine option: a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 180 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. As I quickly found out, it has just enough power for merging and passing other cars on the highway. Given how well it handles, I didn't mind its lack of power. What became more and more bothersome over time was how the power is delivered. There's a noticeable lag off the line when you jam the accelerator, so making quick maneuvers in traffic can get a little tricky.No maintenance problems plagued our Sonata through the year, but the car visited the dealership twice for routine servicing. Our first service trip was free, but Hyundai charged $92.01 for our second visit. These costs will look quite different for typical retail customers of newer Sonatas, however. For retail vehicles sold on or after February 1, 2020, Hyundai offers complimentary maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.Subaru also offers free maintenance, which is why our long-term 2017 Subaru Legacy cost $0 over three service visits and 20,460 miles. Free maintenance hasn't been the norm among the Sonata's competitors we've tested for a year, though. We spent $178.96 for two service visits on our long-term 2014 Mazda 6, which logged 24,316 miles, and $204.92 on two services for our 2013 Nissan Altima, which finished its run at 21,774 miles. Surprisingly, our long-term 2013 Honda Accord cost more than all of these sedans, racking up a bill of $209.42 for two service visits over a course of 22,856 miles.Driving the Sonata for a year revealed more about the sedan's quality and maintenance costs, but what will the ownership experience look like over the course of five years? Our colleagues at IntelliChoice have some insights. Although we enjoy all the fancy features that come with the top Limited trim, it might not be the choice if you're looking to maximize value. The lower SE trim gets a Good value rating, but the other trims earn Mediocre or Average scores. The 2020 Sonata Limited has been deemed an Average value when taking into account depreciation, insurance, fuel costs, state fees, financing, maintenance, and repairs.The Honda Accord remains our top pick for a midsize sedan because of its superior driving dynamics and its spacious, well-packaged interior. That said, our yearlong test confirms the Sonata is a solid pick. Among its rather conservative, plain-looking competitors, the Sonata stands out with its sharp design. More important, its tech-forward cabin continues to delight over time, speaking to its strong feature-per-dollar value. Its playful handling never gets old on a twisty road.
