Meet the Two Vietnamese VinFast SUVs You'll Be Able to Buy in the U.S.
VinFast, a fresh startup automaker hailing from Vietnam, is almost ready to start selling vehicles in the U.S. The company announced back in November that it will start U.S. operations with two electric SUVs, and this week used the CES event in Las Vegas to reveal three other electric SUVs, although it isn't yet known whether those also will make it to America.
Le Thi Thu Thuy, Global CEO of VinFast, also announced in Las Vegas that her company plans to retire the internal combustion engine (ICE) by the end of this year, focusing all its resources on electric vehicles. Currently, VinFast sells electric and ICE vehicles in Vietnam. The move also caused the company to start a new nomenclature for its vehicles. The VF e35 and VF e36, the two electric SUVs shown at the Los Angeles auto show in November, are dropping their "e" signifiers and are now simply the VF 8 (a two-row midsize SUV) and VF 9 (three-row full-size crossover).
While there is no set date for VinFast to start operations in the U.S., the company expects to start selling its vehicles by the end of 2022 and has already announced plans to build a U.S. factory to manufacture batteries (though its location isn't set yet).
So, what are the two products VinFast will enter the U.S. market with?
VF 8
Starting at $41,000, the VF 8 is a five-passenger midsize SUV that's about the size of a Ford Edge. Its styling is sharp, with a wing-like running light that cuts across the nose giving the VF 8 a visually wider stance. Its grille-less front quickly gives away that it's an EV, while its split headlights lend it an upscale look.
Details are very scarce, but VinFast says it will deliver 402 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque with a 316-mile range. That last number is based on the European Emission Test Cycle, which means the EPA will rank it well below that. Still, that should be competitive with today's electric crossovers, should the battery deliver. Acceleration to 60 mph will be in the mid-five second range, according to the automaker. No word on the battery or electric motor specs or charging times.
VF 9
The full-size SUV can transport between six and seven passengers and shares the same powertrain numbers as the VF 8, except it can travel 422 miles and it can get to 60 mph in approximately 6.5 seconds—a hint that it probably has a bigger battery.
Like many full-size SUVs, the VF 9 wears boxier styling, but we're particularly thrown off by its C-pillar, as it tries to connect the windows instead of setting them apart. Like the VF 8, the front of the VF 9 has that wing-like daytime running lamp that lights up to give the SUV a futuristic look, but unlike its younger sibling, its headlights are one piece. The air vents on the front fascia help with aerodynamics and cool down the brakes.
Both SUVs share a clean interior, with a large screen on the dashboard similar to other EV startups like Tesla or Rivian, and there is no other screen or instrument cluster is in front of the driver. The cars on display at CES were locked, so we can't comment on the cabins' material quality or interior space. The jet-inspired push-button shifter is well integrated into the center console.
Although former GM designer David Lyon has been supporting VinFast since 2017, the startup partnered with Pininfarina design studio to craft its models. And, well, we're happy with the way they came out.
There are still many questions up in the air. VinFast is talking about a battery lease program where the owner would have to pay a monthly fee to use the battery, but hasn't given details about how that will work, or how much it will cost. The CEO did say that the company will replace the battery for free if its capacity drops below 72 percent and maintenance is included with the monthly fee.
How will VinFast sell cars in the U.S? When will it start operations? What are the details underneath the SUVs? Those are all questions still unanswered, though the company is excited to enter the market at some point this year. To get U.S. customers hooked, VinFast is introducing a voucher program to go along the reservations. With a $200 deposit, the customer can get a $3,000 voucher for the VF 8 and a $5,000 voucher for the VF 9, along with an NFT and blockchain technology.

The age of the performance SUV was upon us. Over the ensuing decade and a half, Porsche and others have refined the formula, creating a new class of super SUVs that'll now surprise not just sports cars on a good back road but also the rare supercar. The new 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT takes that formula to the next level.What Makes the Cayenne Turbo GT Tick?At first glance, the Cayenne Turbo GT doesn't appear all that different than the Cayenne Turbo Coupe. Meaner-looking, sure, thanks to wider air intakes in the nose, black accents, a carbon-fiber roof, and not one but two spoilers (the lower one is active, to boot)—but overall not all that different. Look even closer, and perhaps you'll notice that the Cayenne Turbo GT sits about three-quarters of an inch lower than the Cayenne Turbo. It's a sleeper of sorts.Under the skin, things get even more interesting. For starters, the Cayenne Turbo's familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 gets reworked, now breathing out of a titanium exhaust system. Power rises from 541 hp and 567 lb-ft in the standard Cayenne Turbo to a healthy 631 hp and 626 lb-ft of torque in the Cayenne Turbo GT—that's just 10 horsepower and 1 lb-ft shy of the Lamborghini Urus, which shares its platform and engine with the Porsche. Helping put that power down is a quicker-shifting eight-speed automatic and a water-cooled torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system that's beefier than the air-cooled unit on lesser Cayennes. Stiffer air springs, pizza-sized carbon-ceramic brakes, and a more aggressive four-wheel steering system round out the Turbo GT package.How Fast Is the Cayenne Turbo GT?The combo is good enough to make the Cayenne Turbo GT the second-quickest SUV MotorTrend has ever tested-with the competition so close we need to resort to a second decimal place to split the difference. The Porsche rips from 0 to 60 mph in 3.02 seconds and on through the quarter mile in 11.32 seconds at 120.93 mph. That just trails the last Urus we tested. It's 2.97-second 0-60 run, combined with its 11.31-second at 120.06 mph quarter-mile performance was enough to make it the quickest SUV we've ever tested.Still, the Porsche makes up some ground in braking and handling. The Cayenne Turbo GT stops from 60 mph in 105 feet (2 feet shorter than the Lamborghini), and it runs the figure eight in 23.2 seconds at 0.88 g average. That not only bests the Urus' 23.5 second at 0.87 g performance but also shames quite a few sport sedans (like the BMW M3 Competition xDrive and Cadillac CT4 and CT5-V Blackwing) and sports cars (including Porsche's own 911 Targa 4S and 718 Boxster and Cayman GTS 4.0).Out in the real world, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT is more than just quick—it's incredibly fun, too. Despite the 5,000 pounds the engine is lugging around, the fastback SUV feels light on its feet and properly fast. The V-8 makes gobs of power, and the eight-speed auto acts like Porsche's famed PDK dual-clutch, backing up the V-8 bark with perfectly timed shifts each and every time. The fast, precise steering rack is "Porsche perfect with amazing feedback," road test editor Chris Walton says, and it combines with the retuned all-wheel-drive system and big brakes to allow you to dive hard into corners and rocket hard out of them as the torque vectoring and four-wheel steering system combine to laugh in the face of physics.Is there room for improvement? Sure. The stiffer suspension is, well, stiffer, on real-world pavement and can be borderline harsh. Some on staff also found the Cayenne to be so competent that it verged on boring. The Cayenne Turbo GT, in other words, feels a lot like an Urus for introverts—it's nowhere near as loud and showy as the related Lambo is.It's nowhere near as expensive, either.How Much Is a Cayenne Turbo GT?We wouldn't go so far as to call the 2022 Cayenne Turbo GT (which starts at $182,150 and as tested for $208,850) affordable, but it's a shockingly good value for a super SUV. Consider its only true competitor on the performance spectrum, the Urus—it starts at nearly $220,000. The Bentley Bentayga Speed, meanwhile, starts at about $240,000 and lost to a "regular" Cayenne Turbo in our last comparison test. The Aston Martin DBX is about $180,000 to start but is slower than a Cayenne Turbo. The DBX S might be able to hang with the Turbo GT, but it's likely to start north of $200,000. Meanwhile, neither BMW's M division nor Mercedes-AMG offers a vehicle (not the M6 Competition or the GLE 63 Black Edition) that can dance with this Porsche.The VerdictAlthough the jury's out on whether the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT is better to drive than the Lamborghini Urus, fact is it may not matter. The Cayenne Turbo GT is one of the purest, most engaging, and most fun-to-drive SUVs to hit the road. As if SiriusXM satellite radio knew how to mitigate the uneasiness we felt by the fact our test truck—a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country pickup—was driving us courtesy of its Super Cruise system, we couldn't help but sing heartily along to Bob Seger's "Like a Rock." If you're of a certain age, you know this song backed Chevrolet's epic pickup ad campaign of the 1990s. And in this moment as we drove the Silverado 1500 High Country, it magically and nostalgically bridged the gap between the Silverado of the past and the Silverado of the present. Yes, the Chevy Silverado 1500 has come a long way since its "Like a Rock" days, but it's still a Chevy truck through and through.By the StickerHere's a quick rundown of the Monroney label—otherwise known as the window sticker—for the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 4x4. The High Country is the Silverado lineup's top trim alongside the off-road-oriented Silverado ZR2. We'll leave it to you to decide whether you love or hate the idea of a street-oriented luxury Chevy with 22-inch painted aluminum wheels featuring chrome inserts. One opinion is that the wheel's complexity could render well in an even larger 24-inch (or more) diameter.Chevrolet delivered the Dark Ash Metallic (a new color for 2022) Silverado High Country to us equipped with a bounty of add-ons: High Country Premium package (power sunroof, all-weather floor liners, 22-inch wheels), Super Cruise, Technology package (rear camera mirror, head-up display, adaptive cruise control, enhanced automatic emergency braking), power-retractable assist steps, adaptive ride control suspension, wheel locks, and Multiflex tailgate.0-60 MPH: Trailing the Twin-Turbo V-6s, Leading Other V-8sThe 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country is powered by Chevy's 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V-8 gasoline engine. It's good for 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, backed by a 10-speed automatic transmission. This is the largest-displacement, most powerful naturally aspirated V-8 in the segment. Bigger doesn't always mean better, though: While GM continues to smash this stout V-8 under the hood, many of its competitors offer smaller-displacement twin-turbo V-6 variants.To the point, how does the 5,578-pound Silverado High Country stack up against the new 2022 Toyota Tundra Platinum? The latter is a prime example of a truck that ditched its V-8 in favor of a 3.4-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder that makes 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. (There's also a stronger hybrid version.) According to our previous test numbers, the Tundra—532 pounds heavier (woof) while lacking 31 hp but gaining 19 lb-ft compared to the Chevy—accelerates from 0 to 60 mph a mere 0.1 second slower than the Silverado's 6.0 seconds. Sure, there are a bunch of additional variables at play here—we didn't test the two trucks at the same time, and they feature different gearing, transmission tuning, and so on—but the lighter, higher-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 Silverado didn't run away from the turbo-V-6-powered Tundra.As for Ford's EcoBoost V-6? The 2021 Ford F-150 4x4 Lariat FX4 twin-turbo EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 (400 hp, 500 lb-ft, and 238 pounds lighter than the Silverado) hit 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The 2021 Ford Raptor (with the high-output 450-hp, 510-lb-ft EcoBoost and 391 pounds heavier) needed 5.6 seconds, followed by the High Country 0.4 second behind. Ultimately, the Silverado's 6.2-liter V-8 is unsurprisingly better suited for heavy towing up grades than it is for track sprints against turbocharged V-6 trucks. Interestingly, the 6.2-liter Silverado RST—158 pounds lighter than the High Country—put down a 5.5-second 0-60 time, which spanks the High Country by half a second and lands it between the two EcoBoost Fords.How does the 6.2-liter 2022 Chevrolet Silverado High Country fare against other V-8 trucks in its class? The 2021 Ford F-150 4x4 King Ranch, packing a 400-hp, 410-lb-ft 5.0-liter V-8 and carrying an additional 109 pounds, hit 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. The 2019 Ram 1500 Limited 4X4 eTorque featuring a 395-hp and 410-lb-ft 5.7-liter V-8 Hemi (and 298 pounds heavier) did so in 6.5 seconds. So the 6.2-liter Silverado is no slouch against the other naturally aspirated V-8s in its segment.Finally, on paper and in certain conditions, GM's 6.2-liter V-8 certainly outperforms the 355-hp, 383-lb-ft 5.3-liter V-8, another engine option for the High Country, as is a 3.0-liter diesel. For daily trundling, though, it would be hard to discern a 5.3-liter from the 6.2. Worth noting: The 6.2 is available only with four-wheel drive.Track Attitude: Getting Aggressive in a Luxury TruckGranted, not many folks will ever drive their 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country like a sports car. But if you overheat its brakes, the truck tells you so via a dashboard message. A 45-mph speed limit kicks in at that point for a short period while the brakes cool down.As for the High Country's performance on the MT figure-eight course, which tests handling characteristics, tester Chris Walton was surprised by how sporty the upscale Silverado was in auto four-wheel-drive mode. "The firm brake pedal is quite effective, so long as you stay out of the ABS," he said. "Do it right, and you can bleed the brakes into the skidpad almost like a sport sedan. The truck doesn't roll much on the skidpad and stays quite neutral with a mild bit of understeer. The throttle mapping, however, is a bit off. The throttle is sensitive and makes it difficult to maintain a constant speed on the skidpad. Overall, it comes off as quite sporty for a luxury pickup truck."(Not) Driving With Super CruiseOne of the big deals about the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 High Country is that it has available Super Cruise, a $2,200 option. Yes, GM's semi-autonomous hands-free-driving system has trickled down to Chevy trucks. We found some compatible freeways and gave it a try; despite some inherent trust issues, it worked, but we have a few stories.On one occasion, a car was merging onto the freeway at a substantially slower rate than we were traveling. We could see it was going to merge in front of us, but when it seemed like the truck "missed" seeing the car and did not lift, we took control and initiated braking. It's likely the Silverado would have seen the other vehicle by the time it was fully in our lane, but it might have left "unsmart" cars behind us braking too hard for comfort.On another occasion, Super Cruise deemed there was room for a lane change, but traffic in our new lane slowed substantially as the truck made its move. The High Country, still wanting to leave a rather big gap between itself and the car in front, also slowed substantially. We saw the driver behind us needed to unexpectedly brake hard—and our maneuver came across as a "brake check." Super Cruise was just doing what it computed was best for the situation, but we received an angry middle finger in return.A Cockpit Worth Talking AboutThe 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country's new interior is one of its other big deals. Good news: it's not offensive anymore. It feels and looks like it belongs in 2022, and it's competitive with other pickups on the market. It's natural and contemporary, more horizontally oriented than upright. The 13.4-inch color touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and 15.0-inch head-up display contribute to its modern feel.Did you notice the shifter on the center console? That's different for a Chevy truck. It took a split second to figure out how to work it, but we never looked back once we did. Also, the location of the wireless charging pad cubby is perfect and out of the way—and not inherently serving double duty as a crap pad. You know that spot where fast food trash, banana peels, and loose change resides. Don't worry, Chevy left some removable rubberized pads around three sides of the shifter for miscellaneous things.In terms of interior colors, our tester was labeled as Jet Black and Nightshift Blue. In true Chevrolet fashion, there's an uncountable number of available colors—variants of chrome, piano black, blue, gray, tan, brown, silver—in a cornucopia of materials including smooth plastic, textured plastic, open-pore wood, and leather. All in all, the touch points are soft, the seats are comfortable, charge ports are accessible, and it's all palatable and impressive.Indeed, this 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country is "like a rock," but one that's unrecognizable compared to what it used to be. It goes without saying, though it's often mentioned, that it takes enormous courage to full throttle your way up Pikes Peak with its 156 turns surrounded by unforgiving borders. Even with a laundry list of safety equipment, capable tires, and almost cartoonish aero, pushing a high-powered vehicle to its limits while maintaining control is a big ask, but it's the sort of challenge that PZ Tuning's William Au-Yeung seems to relish in.We've been here before, unfortunately. In 2019, after having earned multiple wins and track records in the U.S., Australia, Japan, and perhaps his most prized win - the overall course record at Global Time Attack, besting RWD and AWD competition, William's 9th gen. Civic coupe was unstoppable. That is, until it threw a rod while traveling over 170mph at Road America. His tires would make contact with the rush of oil from the newfound window in the block and the car then made contact with the wall multiple times. Fortunately, William walked away, the car however, was done.On their way home from that fiery wreck, William's wife was already scouring the web for a new chassis to build and just a few years later, version 2.0 was completed, and a comeback established. The new build was performing well at Pikes Peak last year and getting comfortable behind the wheel, William and his team were on pace to capture the FWD record, but weather conditions demanded an early stop to the entire competition and that goal was cut short. Returning to Pikes Peak for the 100th running, William was fully prepared to pick up right where things left off the year prior. Conditions weren't ideal with low visibility and a wet surface to contend with, but competition continued and the PZ Tuning Civic was on a tear during the event, focused on grabbing that FWD record that seemed almost inevitable based on its pace.Blazing an impressive effort throughout sections 1-3, this was it - William was on his way to earn that record even with freakishly thick fog offering very little visibility. He was pushing the turbo K-series and gobbling up turns but in section 4, he went off course, sending the car into the air and flipping end-over-end. It's not the worst-case scenario, given the massive drops that surround the road, but it's right up there. Once again, William was uninjured and able to unbuckle himself and climb out of the car to survey the damage. Take a look at the video footage below, provided by our friends at Acuity Instruments.Pushing the car to its limits in heavy fog and on a slippery surface in search of a record might not make sense to some, but it's what makes William such a fierce competitor. "I was giving it my all racing up the mountain and it decided to humble me," William says. "Honestly, I don't think I could do it any other way. If I went 'half fast' in racing, then I shouldn't be on that starting line." He also noted that yes, his wife has already located a few potential 9th gen. Civic coupes, a chassis that he says is truly the fastest in his opinion, and yes, he will return with version 3.Based on his experience with the first chassis as compared to the second, I asked if there would be any major changes in store. "No, this car was almost perfect, it was dialed in. The biggest shame out of all of this is we could've just kept racing it forever just as it was. Not to say there won't be improvements in the new build, but definitely not a whole other level in it. I mean, the speeds we had this car at are simply unbelievable. To qualify between a V8 Hayabusa Wolf and an LMP3 would be unthinkable in a normal world."In terms of a timeline for PZ Tuning's return, William says, "There's no timeline honestly. We're one of the smallest race teams out there and our normal business is just a small auto shop comprised of my wife, one employee, and myself…that also comprises the bulk of our race team! I do almost all of my own fab work from the cage to the carbon fiber, and all of my mechanical work like the engine, gearbox, electrical, harness, etc."Photos Courtesy of Acuity Instruments and Larry ChenOne thing is for certain, the small team at PZ Tuning knows how to put a competitive car together and they don't skimp on safety details. Two serious crashes both resulted in its pilot walking away virtually unharmed. Will says, "There are parts of this chassis that were designed specifically for Pikes Peak and there was more weight to be saved if it was only for Time Attack. I'm a true believer that you can never build it safe enough, whether Pikes Peak or circuit. You always want to have the right scenario for all safety to work as intended."
