Driven! The Ferrari Daytona SP3 Isn’t Rational—and That’s the Point
The tach needle breezes past 8,000 rpm and keeps going. There's a keening edge to the metallic yowl filling the open cockpit, and the acceleration isn't letting up. Suddenly, I'm a wide-eyed 13-year-old at the movies again, riding along with Erich Stahler as he hammers his Ferrari 512 S flat-out down the Mulsanne Straight in Steve McQueen's epic film Le Mans.
This is what that sounded like. And this is what I always imagined it felt like. A mid-engine Ferrari V-12 at nearly 9,000 rpm.
Blue lights flicker across the top of the steering wheel. The 828 horses behind me are stampeding toward the engine's 9,500-rpm rev limit. I keep my right foot buried and tug the right-hand paddle, and there's a hard, clean crack from the exhaust, like a .30-06 fired deep in the woods. The tach needle drops to just below the 8,000 mark, and the banshee-mad rush continues unabated as the big, red roadster storms through the French countryside.
Wrapped in jaw-dropping bodywork that controversially combines classic '60s curves with 21st century aero brutalism, the Ferrari Daytona SP3 is pure theater on wheels. This car unashamedly celebrates why you'd spend more than $2.2 million on an open-top Ferrari; the sound, the fury, the wanton magnificence of an engine format that's powered some of Maranello's greatest racing cars.
A Cordial Missile
But you don't have to suffer for its art. Once you get used to the width of the rear fenders and the low clearance up front—using the standard nose lift system is essential when negotiating driveways or speedbumps—the Daytona SP3 is as benign and easy to use as a Ferrari 296 GTB. You could easily drive this thing every day.
The Daytona SP3 is the latest in Ferrari's Icona series, a range of limited-edition cars handbuilt at Maranello using key components borrowed from previous Ferrari production cars. Just 599 will be built, and all have been sold despite that stratospheric price tag. The first of around 150 total cars for U.S. Ferrari enthusiasts arrives stateside in the second quarter of 2023.
Although Ferrari engineers say about 70 percent of the Daytona SP3's components are new, the chassis is a modified version of the LaFerrari Aperta hypercar's carbon-fiber monocoque. The suspension layout and geometry are identical, as are the giant 15.7-inch front and 15.0-inch rear brakes.
Like the LaFerrari, the Daytona SP3 is fitted with 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, though the Pirelli P Zero Corsas, 265/30 at the front and 345/30 at the rear, have been specifically developed for the car to maximize stability in low grip conditions.
That Engine—That Glorious Engine
The Daytona SP3's 6.5-liter V-12 is a modified version of the front-engine 812 Competizione coupe's powerplant. Codenamed F140HC, it is the most powerful internal combustion road car engine ever built by Ferrari.
The F140HC makes its 828 horsepower at a dizzying 9,250 rpm and pumps out 514 lb-ft of torque at 7,250 rpm. That 9,500-rpm top end comes courtesy of new titanium connecting rods, which are 40 percent lighter than equivalent steel items, as well as new pistons, a lighter and rebalanced crankshaft, and sliding finger cam followers, a low-mass/low-friction technology borrowed from Ferrari's F1 engines.
The first two Icona cars, the Monza SP1 and Monza SP2, evoked the spirit of front-engine Ferrari barchettas from the 1950s. The wasp-waisted Daytona SP3's voluptuous haunches and close-coupled cockpit channels mid-engine V-12 Ferrari race cars from the late '60s and early '70s.
The Daytona SP3 is not as pretty as any of those cars, especially the gorgeous 330 P3 and P4, or the 512 S, but Ferrari design chief Flavio Manzoni says it's not meant to be a simple homage, a retro car. It's meant to be a modern interpretation of the spirit of those classic Ferraris, built in a modern way, using modern materials and modern technologies. That's why 2020s aerodynamic theory has played just as much a part in shaping the Daytona SP3 as 1960s nostalgia.
The flics underneath the hooded headlights increase downforce at the front axle, for example, and surfaces on the front fenders and doors control airflow along the side of the car. Chimneys bring air from underneath and direct it past the rear haunches, over the top surface of the engine cover, and toward the subtle rear spoiler.
It's clever stuff: Ferrari says the Daytona SP3 generates just over 500 pounds of downforce at 125 mph without any active aerodynamic devices.
Interfacing With the Machine
You sit low in the Daytona SP3 and toward the center of the car, just as you would in a sports prototype racer. The seats are fixed, their basic shape integrated into the composite central tub and covered with foam. Tugging on a nylon strap at the front of the seat, between your legs, allows the pedal box to move fore and aft, and the steering wheel is also adjustable for reach and rake. Ferrari says the fixed seating reduces weight and helps keep the car's overall height to just 45 inches, which also helps minimize drag.
The Daytona SP3's steering wheel features the same Human-Machine Interface (HMI) concept used in the 296 GTB, among others. Touch controls allow drivers to operate 80 percent of the Daytona SP3's functions without moving their hands off the steering wheel. Controls to switch the lights on and off, adjust the exterior rearview mirrors, and change the air conditioning settings are on haptic touch pads on the dash.
The Manettino switch on the steering wheel activates four drive modes under the watchful aegis of an upgraded version of Ferrari's ingenious Side Slip Control system dubbed SSC6.1. Wet is for conditions when traction is at a premium. Sport is the default drive mode, and Race sharpens engine, transmission, and chassis responses. GT-Off gives the driver total control.
The Daytona SP3 is the first mid-engine V-12 Ferrari to have the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE) system that will allow drivers to drift the car if they want, automatically keeping the maximum yaw angle under control by adjusting the brake pressure at each wheel. FDE can be activated with the Manettino switched to Race and GT-Off modes.
Even with the roof removed and the scissor door wide open, you need a snake-hipped wriggle to get past the protruding corner of the dash and into the driver's seat without kneecapping yourself. As you settle in and push the pedal box into the correct position, you'll notice the front tire right there, just past your left knee. Your feet are just behind the front axle centerline in a car with a 104.3-inch wheelbase.
Cabs don't come much more forward than this.
The Alcantara on the driver's seat spills over the vestigial center console and onto the passenger seat, almost giving the impression you've settled into a fancy bench seat. Two slim headrests wrap around like wings, ready to cradle a crash helmet. There's Alcantara on the padding on the doors and on the dash, and small mats on the floors. Pretty much everything else is naked carbon fiber.
The SP3 Experience
Thumb the Engine Start-Stop logo on the steering wheel, and there's none of the turbine-like wind-up so typical of a V-12 start: The F140HC simply crackles into life and settles to a brisk idle. Even before you touch the throttle, it feels like an engine with low reciprocating masses.
With the Manettino set to Sport and the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission left to its own devices, the Daytona SP3 will happily amble around all day at low to middling speeds, requiring little more effort to drive than a Toyota.
The fixed seats are surprisingly comfy, and the ride is surprisingly supple despite the tight rein on the body motions and the contour-hugging low-profile tires. If the tarmac gets too gnarly, a quick press on the Manettino activates the Bumpy Road mode to further soften the ride.
The bulging front fenders frame your view ahead, just as they do in a Le Mans sports prototype. The external rearview mirrors are mounted on them, right at the front axle line. They work brilliantly, providing an excellent view past the Daytona SP3's voluptuous hips.
As there's no rear window, the internal mirror displays an image from a rear-facing camera. On a sunny day, with the roof off, it's useless, reflections obscuring everything. But as Raúl Julia said in The Gumball Rally as he ripped the rearview mirror off his Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider: "What's behind me is not important."
Maybe it's an open-top Daytona thing…
With all that power and torque moving barely 3,500 pounds, the Daytona SP3 feels impressively fast and light on its feet. Then you flick the Manettino to Race and the transmission to manual and … oh, lordy!
It's Certainly Performant
Ferrari claims the Daytona SP3 will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds (they say 2.85, but we round up) and hit 124 mph in 7.4 seconds on the way to a top speed of 211 mph. There are cars that are quicker through their gears and cars that are faster at the top end. But there's nothing that feels like this Ferrari on a full-throttle run.
The rush of power from the screaming F140HC simply keeps building and building and building, right to the rev limiter. The Daytona SP3 feels like it will accelerate forever.
Smooth and free-spinning and wonderfully tractable from little more than idle speeds, the F140HC is a masterclass in the art and science of the naturally aspirated V-12 engine. Its throttle response above 7,000 rpm is simply stunning, as crisp and sparkling as vintage champagne. It barks like a hot-rodded superbike engine on downshifts, the revs snapping so fast it's hard to believe it displaces 6.5 liters.
It makes most big-horsepower V-8s feel as clumsy as barroom brawlers 15 beers in, punching the walls.
It's not all about the engine, though. Maybe it's because you expect the extravagantly proportioned, extravagantly priced Daytona SP3 to be little more than a rich man's plaything, more for show than serious go, it comes as a genuine surprise to discover than when driven as hard as you dare, it stops and steers and goes around corners with the casual aplomb that's fast becoming a Ferrari trademark.
Underneath the aural and visual theatrics is a serious, fully sorted car, with a chassis that's been set up to help you make the most of that extraordinary engine.
The braking is strong and progressive, and the steering is precise and well weighted and delivers great feedback. The SSC6.1 system delivers a ton of traction out of the corners, even in Race mode, without compromising front-end grip when you go to power.
It intimidates at first, this Ferrari, not the least because it's big and wide and powerful and costs nearly as much as a Manhattan condo. But after a couple miles it shrinks around you, and before long you're pinballing it from apex to apex like an old Mazda Miata, marveling at its acuity on changes of direction, exalting in the adrenalin rush of acceleration along the straights, and laughing out loud at the unholy mashup of Pavarotti and the Sex Pistols that is the F140HC's manic soundtrack.
The Ferrari Daytona SP3 is the very antithesis of a rational automobile. But that's the whole point. It hasn't been designed to set new performance benchmarks, to showcase new technologies, to rewrite the supercar rulebook. It's been created to exhilarate and entertain, to deliver an intoxicating rush every time you punch the gas. To make you feel spine-tinglingly alive when you drive it fast.
It's time to hand the Daytona SP3 back. But I just can't resist one more run through the gears. 8,000 … 8,500 … 9,000 … 9,500 rpm. Oh, yes, mission accomplished.

Sequoia trees are thought to be the oldest living things on Earth, so it's appropriate that Toyota's full-size SUV is named for them: The soon-to-be-outgoing Sequoia dates from 2008, and over the three thousand years—okay, 13—it's been on sale, we've watched it slip from first to last in comparison to its competitors. Finally, it looks like a new Sequoia sapling is born: Toyota has revealed the 2023 Sequoia, with a few surprises that make it feel like an SUV for the ages.If you think the current Sequoia is a bit too plain—and certainly if you think it's too old—the new one should address your concerns. Up front, the new Sequoia shares its curves and creases with the all-new 2022 Tundra pickup truck. Out back, they've been re-interpreted a bit, with a fenderline crease that starts just ahead of the rear door handles and continues straight back to the taillights. It's less doughy and anonymous than the old model, more aggressive—traits backed up by what's under the hood.So, What's Under the Hood?For those keeping score in the Toyotaverse, the new Sequoia one-ups the (also Land Cruiser-based) Lexus LX600 in the power department. While both large SUVs share a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6, the Sequoia's is hybridized, assisted by an electric motor. With 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque, it thus bests the Lexus by 28 hp and 104 lb-ft. The hybridized six is an era away from the old Sequoia's 5.7-liter V-8, which made a paltry—by comparison—381 hp and 401 lb-ft. While we have yet to see official efficiency numbers, we can't imagine the Sequoia's hybrid powertrain won't improve on the LX's 19-mpg fuel economy; it's guaranteed to be better than the old Sequoia's mid-teens mpg.And doesn't that meaty hybrid sound like it has boat-towing power? Oh, you betcha. Toyota says the new Sequoia will tow up to 9,000 lbs, a 22% improvement over the outgoing Sequoia despite giving up two cylinders to its V-8. A Tow Tech Package, which (among other things) steers the trailer in reverse, helps alleviate some causes of towing apprehension.Don't Say Land Cruiser... Speaking of the Land Cruiser—which we swear we were just a minute ago—we found a possible explanation to the demise of Toyota's former flagship SUV (other than its relative lack of sales): The Sequoia will be available in a new range-topping Capstone trim, as recently announced for the Tundra pickup, pushing it into the old Land Cruiser's price turf. With 22-inch chrome wheels, two-tone black-and-white semi-aniline leather, and open-pore walnut wood distinguish this model from lesser Sequoias, which include Platinum, Limited and SR5 models.Another quick aside: The Sequoia shares its basic bones with the new Tundra, of course, but also with the newest Land Cruiser sold globally. While it is not a replacement for the iconic Land Cruiser 4x4, which is renowned for its off-road prowess, it is at least related to that SUV.To help fill in the void left in its lineup by the Land Cruiser and to build on the previous-generation Sequoia's off-road offerings, Toyota will once again offer a TRD Pro model, which includes Fox internal bypass shocks, a forward skid plate, multi-terrain drive modes, and Toyota's Crawl Control mode, which maintains a slow, steady speed uphill or down. You'll find plenty of TRD badging inside and out, and this version is only available with four-wheel drive.If the TRD Pro is too, uh, pro for you, SR5 and Limited 4x4 models can be had with a lighter-duty TRD Off-Road package with a locking rear differential, specially-tuned springs and Bilstein shocks, unique 18-inch wheels, as well as the terrain modes and Crawl Control from the TRD Pro package. SR5 models are also offered with an on-road-tuned TRD Sport package with 20-inch wheels, TRD-tuned springs and shocks, and aluminum pedals. Two-wheel drive is standard and part-time four-wheel drive is optional on all on SR5, Limited, Platinum, and—surprisingly—Capstone trim levels. The Sequoia once again utilizes a fully independent suspension, though since 2008 more competitors have added this feature in place of a more traditional (and pickup-truck-like) live rear axle, including the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon.Safely In Modern TerritoryAs with other Toyota models, a full safety and driver-aid package is standard, including collision detection with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert and correction, automatic high beams, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking assistance with automatic braking.Inside, the Sequoia is just as new and fresh-appearing. Also, like before, the dashboard and steering wheel are essentially carryover from the Tundra pickup. There is an available large (14-inch!) central touchscreen, chunky air vents, and an available digital gauge cluster. What's important here is that nothing looks like it was designed in 2007—a key step forward.Toyota will build the Sequoia at the same San Antonio, Texas, plant that assembles the Tundra. We'll have pricing and fuel economy data as we get closer to launch, which will come when the weather gets warm; Sequoias are scheduled to arrive at Toyota dealerships this summer. We're looking forward to seeing how this modernized old tree branches into the full-size SUV space, which is now chock full of relatively new contenders, including the recently redesigned Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Nissan Armada, and all-new Jeep Wagoneer.
A proposed West Virginia bill outlines multiple new strict guidelines for automakers to adhere to in their relationship with dealership networks, including a ban on some (increasingly prevalent) over-the-air software updates that change the driving functionality of the car. Updates to mapping and infotainment systems would still be kosher, but anything that changes how the car drives could soon be off the table, including important safety updates.The new motion, introduced by the West Virginia automotive dealership trade association, according to GM Authority, is an amendment to current West Virginia House Bill 4560. The previous version simply mentioned all warranty and recall repair work had to be performed by a dealership, but the new text is what stipulates new rules for the burgeoning trend of over-the-air driving updates. Here's what it says:Over-the-air (OTA) updates, where an automaker can tweak, update or repair glitches, features and hardware with software downloaded into the car's computer system over an internet connection, are a relatively new feature in modern cars. The concept allows minor fixes to be rolled out as soon as they are ready to go in the car, without the owner or operator ever having to actually take the car to a service station.Luxury vehicles more bent toward the tech-friendly crowd have been the early adopters, especially the Tesla Model S, Chevy Bolt, Lucid Air, Porsche Taycan, and more. OTA updates are a useful tool, and as more cars produced come with onboard data connections, it's a tool that's spreading rapidly.If you're wondering why dealers would want you to need to drive your car to the dealership for any non-infotainment system update, well it of course is all about money. It would seem the West Virginia dealer's association views OTA updates as a potential financial risk. Since there are no parts costs in software fixes, dealers don't want to see the labor charges for any vehicle updates (warranty or recall related or otherwise) dry up, as well, just because your car is connected to the internet.Dealerships also recognize the importance of getting you to their lots to service your car: you can shop for a new one while you wait. And that's why the proposed updates to the bill would also ban automakers from selling vehicles directly to customers in WV outside of the dealer model. From the bill:"This part is similar to other nationwide bans on direct-sales, which are often also heavily defended by local dealership trade groups. You may remember Tesla taking quite a few fights to states like Michigan, where direct sales to customers are not allowed and cars must be sold through a franchised dealership network. Today, Tesla has to sell cars to Michigan owners out of state, and established a subsidiary company to open servicing locations in the state.Obviously, these new proposals in HB4560 would be bad for consumers in West Virginia. First, their cars would no longer be allowed to receive potentially significant instant updates that could impact all aspects of their car, from driving range, interior controls, drive-mode settings, and safety system updates. Instead, it would put a cost on those things for customers directly, both in time spent getting the car needlessly serviced, and in the potential dealer fees you'll have to pay for something that's free to owners in other states.On top of that, if you wanted to avoid the dealership model altogether to buy a new car for yourself, you would not be allowed to without going out of the state. We don't see any upside for the vehicle owner in the proposed legislation, and CleanTechnica reports a lobbying group, Alliance for Automotive Innovation that represents many Japanese automakers, publicly spoke out against the proposals. The bill in its current form has nine sponsors in the State House and passed through its second reading today; we expect more lobbying groups or potential statements from automakers and other groups until the bill passes, or the proposals are modified.
The upcoming Lotus Emira will be the last combustion-powered sports car from the fabled British sports car maker, and they seem to be sorting out a very special tune to celebrate it. While many will be interested in the more-powerful V-6 model, the Lotus Emira will also adopt AMG's turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4, which the company claims is the most-powerful road-going four-pot in the world. To equip it in a mid-engine sports car configuration is incredibly drool-inducing.The Emira will go on sale with either a 3.5-liter supercharged V-6 sourced from Toyota, or AMG's 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, and both will be available in the "First Edition" launch spec for the model. The blown V-6 puts out just over 400 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, but it's the fancy new four-cylinder that will get people talking.The Mercedes-AMG four-cylinder is already in production, found under the hoods of performance models such as the Mercedes-AMG CLA45, GLA45 and GLB45, but Lotus says the engine will get a slight re-work for the Emira's mid-engine configuration, as well as a unique software tune and Lotus-designed exhaust. The twin-scroll turbo design allows for minimum lag and faster spool-up. While Lotus and AMG claim the motor is good for up to 208 bhp per liter, the four-cylinder Emira is rated at just 365 hp and shares the same 310 lb-ft of torque as the more expensive V-6 Emira.The new I-4 Emira will also get a new-to-Lotus eight-speed paddle-shift dual-clutch gearbox. Gavan Kershaw, Director, Vehicle Attributes, Lotus, says: "It's a bespoke rear-wheel drive variant of the transmission developed by Lotus in collaboration with AMG. On top of that, the gearshift strategy has been defined by the Hethel team as part of the car's performance attributes. It is unique to the Emira and optimised [sic] for the best blend of outstanding driving engagement and performance, fuel consumption and emissions." The V-6 Emira gets a six-speed manual 'box with the addition of a Torsen limited slip differential, or the familiar six-speed auto found on previous Lotus cars.All First Edition Emiras, which you'll be able to option with either motor, come with 20-inch ultra-light forged alloy wheels in a V-spoke design that are diamond cut for a two-tone finish, but all-silver or all-black finish will also be available at no cost. Two-piece brake discs are available with red, yellow, silver or black calipers, with a tire pressure monitoring system included in the First Edition package.Six paint colors are available at launch (Seneca Blue, Magma Red, Hethel Yellow, Dark Verdant, Shadow Grey and Nimbus Grey), paired with seven optional interior colors (red, black, grey and tan Nappa leather, plus three black Alcantara options with either red, yellow or grey stitching). Interior trim is finished in satin chrome, and the seats are 12-way adjustable and heated with driver memory presets.This being Lotus, they felt the need to specify the car comes standard with climate control, cruise control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, a KEF-tuned digital radio behind a 10.25-inch screen, and a 12.3-inch driver display (and the Emira will not be available without these, for you lightweight purists, at least for now).The First Edition comes with four normally optional packages already checked. The Lower Black exterior pack paints the lower features on the car black. The Design Pack adds privacy glass, new pedals, black Alcantara headliner, and throws in floor mats. The Convenience Pack adds parking sensors, a reversing camera, auto-dimming mirrors with memory settings, and rain-sensing wipers.Finally, the Lotus Drivers Pack offers customers the choice of Tour or Sport suspension tunes, and a choice of rubber between a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport or Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. You will have to pick if you order a First Edition, so make sure you do your homework before ordering.The entry-level, AMG I-4 Emira will start at $85,900 in the U.S. for the First Edition model, before factoring in local tax and destination costs. The V-6 First Edition with the manual is $93,900, and with the old six-speed auto it's $96,050. The base V-6 Emira will start at $82,000, and the rest of the Emira lineup pricing will be available this summer.Lotus promises more details on the new lineup this summer, when customer reservations become available outside of the UK. Deliveries are anticipated to begin by the end of this year, and you can now play with the Emira configurator on the Lotus website in the meantime.
