2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate Tested: Aiming to Restore GMC’s Luster
Working as an automotive journalist is a surefire way to get to know all your neighbors. With a weekly (and sometimes daily) rotation of new metal circulating through your driveway, it's rare not to be asked about the vehicles when you dare poke your head outside. In my neighborhood, pickup trucks have been especially popular lately. The questions are usually the same, but a recent conversation involving the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate threw me for a loop.
"Hey, what do you think of that Chevy?" came the inquiry. "The Chevy? Oh, no, that's a Ram TRX," I replied, pointing to our long-term test truck. "No, not that one. It was the boxy-looking truck," he said. "Oh!" I replied, "You mean the electric F-150? Yeah, it was pretty great!" "Yeah … maybe. I could have sworn it said 'Denali' on it," he said.
After an embarrassingly long pause, it came to me: "The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate! I forgot I recently had that one." "Yes! What'd you think?" I paused for a second before replying, "Well, I forgot about it, didn't I?"
This admittedly unfair personal anecdote is a sign of a larger problem for the new luxe Sierra Denali Ultimate: With a high-horsepower electric Ford and an ascendent, stylish Ram across the way, the GMC (and its Chevrolet Silverado sibling) is a bit lost in the shuffle until the next-gen electric trucks arrive. However, the only ones suffering for this are potential buyers; the new Sierra Denali Ultimate is the most convincing Denali product in years. But is it enough as we enter the electric pickup truck revolution?
Why It's Important
It's easy to forget, but back when it first launched, people held GMC's Denali brand in the same esteem as its Cadillac siblings and Lincoln rivals. In fact, MTV's TRL (for the younger crowd, it was a show where you called Carson Daly and asked him to play your favorite music videos) was just as likely to feature a Denali-branded GMC on spinners as it was a Cadillac or Lincoln.
Somewhere along the way, the Denali brand began to lose some luster as rivals stepped up from simply premium to truly luxurious. The new 2022 Sierra Denali Ultimate aims to fix that.
Designed to slot above the already spendy Sierra 1500 Denali, as well as the Sierra 1500 Denali Limited, which is the pre-refresh truck, albeit also a 2022-model-year offering that is confusingly sold alongside the new one, the Ultimate ups the ante by adding double-finished embossed leather, open-pore engineered-wood trim, aluminum accents, and a synthetic suede headliner. GMC finishes off the interior with a smart-looking black and tan color scheme, hand-stitched massaging seats, topographic maps of its namesake mountain etched into the wood, and much less plastic than is typically found in a GMC product.
The 2022 Sierra Denali Ultimate also steps things up on the tech front. Like the new Sierra 1500 AT4X, the Ultimate gets a massive 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a Google-capable 13.4-inch infotainment screen, and a 15.0-inch head-up display. Provided it has enough semiconductors handy, GMC also fits the Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate with its Super Cruise advanced driver assistance system as standard equipment.
Outside, the Denali Ultimate gets the freshened face GMC fit to the Sierra 1500 for 2022, with the addition of black badges and accents, and black-trimmed 22-inch wheels. The Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate is available exclusively in the ever-popular crew-cab, short-bed (in this case a 5.8-foot carbon-fiber job) configuration. A 3.0-liter turbodiesel I-6 making 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque is standard, but our test truck was fitted with the more popular gas-swilling 6.2-liter V-8, which makes 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. All 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimates come standard with 10-speed automatic transmissions and four-wheel drive.
Pricing for the 2022 Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate begins at $83,695, and this loaded test truck stickered for $84,190.
Pros: What We Like
Although there's a fair bit of Spinal Tap-esque "but these go to 11!" nonsense in the Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate's naming and positioning (why not simply make the standard Denali more luxurious, as there's clearly room for improvement there?), there's no denying that by turning up the luxury dial, GMC has finally built a compelling Denali product again. The seats, though a bit hard and short, are swathed in thick, rich-feeling leather, and the aluminum brightwork and convincingly real faux-wood trim do much to make the Sierra's cabin feel special. Some of the materials below the belt feel of lesser quality, but the opulent touches that benefit the front of the cabin thankfully also carry through to the back seats.
The Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate's new tech touches are a welcome addition, too. Super Cruise continues to be the most confidence-inspiring driver's aid on the market, clearly communicating to the driver when it can take control, when it's going to automatically change lanes for you, and when it needs you to resume control. The integrated Google Maps is also done well. We especially appreciated the fact that when you enter a destination into the system, it tells you how many minutes of your route Super Cruise will be available for. This is a really thoughtful touch.
Whether or not Denali Ultimate buyers will ever put the Sierra 1500's bed to good use, the carbon-fiber cargo hold is impressively deep and wide. It features three tie-downs in every corner—an incredibly useful feature.
Cons: What We Don't Like
If the interior is so great, why had I forgotten about the Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate when my neighbor queried me? Probably because it's a bit unremarkable to drive.
Surprisingly, the 6.2-liter V-8-powered pickup truck feels a bit poky compared to its crosstown rivals. The Sierra's V-8 feels big and lazy, and the 10-speed auto feels as if it's tuned for smooth, purposeful shifts, not quick up or down blats like you get in conventionally powered Ram 1500s, even if the GMC is ultimately quicker than all Rams without a dinosaur graphic under the hood. With a 0-60-mph run of 5.7 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 14.2 seconds at 98.5 mph, the Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate isn't exactly slow. However, the performance of the rival F-150 Lightning Platinum, which will hit 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and can run through the quarter mile in 12.7 seconds at 105.9 mph, makes the GMC feel stately in comparison.
Despite the Sierra's standard magnetic dampers, there's room for improvements to ride quality, too. You pay for how good the Denali Ultimate's 22-inch wheels look with a firm, almost flinty ride. The GMC would likely be a far more luxe truck with a smaller wheel package.
Lastly, those big new screens could use a bit more work, too. The graphics are clear and crisp, and the layout is generally intuitive, but the screen responds slowly at times. There were also a handful of instances when menus and features—such as the fancy 16-way massaging front seats, activated by a physical control on your seat but adjusted via the screen—wouldn't load.
The Bottom Line
Although the fancy new interior does much to finally drag the Sierra Denali brand forward, it does so at a time when all of its competitors are redefining what a luxury truck is.

Going on its fourth year of this third generation, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter will lose its available V-6 diesel engine while gaining full-time all-wheel drive and retaining the versatility it's long been known for. While the U.S. won't see the updated van until "early next year (2023)," all of them, regardless of which engine is specified, will use a new 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission. No More Turbodiesel V-6Prior to its 2023 version, the Sprinter could be had with a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 gasoline engine, a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6, and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4. The diesel V-6 has been dropped and a new turbodiesel I-4 is getting installed known as the OM654. This new I-4 turbodiesel will come in two power output ratings—168 hp and 208 hp—while providing "smoother acceleration, high torque values, decreased emissions and lower noise and vibration levels." The gasoline-burning 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 remains the same as 2022.Two More GearsMultiplying those torque levels behind both gas and diesel engines is the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission. When Mercedes compares it to the outgoing seven-speed 7G-Tronic, it claims the 9G offers quicker take-off and improved performance thanks to its shorter first-gear ratio and two more additional gears for a much greater gear ratio spread. The latter point seems rather obvious to point out but the former is important when you consider that the 2023 Sprinter now only offers four cylinder engines.AWD for 4WDThe final big change for 2023 is the move away from a selectable 4WD system to an automatic, full-time all-wheel drive setup, bringing the versatile van into the modern age of electronically controlled wheel torque distribution. Rather than having to select four-wheel drive (as before) via a part-time system like in rugged SUVs, the 2023 Sprinter equipped with four driven wheels will automatically detect wheel slip and apply up to a 50 percent torque split between the front and rear axles, like in most crossovers and cars. The selectable four-wheel-drive system of yore only allowed for up to a 35/65 split when it was in 4WD mode. While it loses a selectable 4WD, the AWD Sprinter will still retain the off-road prowess the 2022 model had in terms of its ground clearance (8.0 inches) in addition to its approach (26 degrees), breakover (23 degrees), and departure (25 degrees) angles.Same VersatilityThe other important factor of the Sprinter is its ease of being as capable inside as it is outside. This is especially true for its commercial users thanks to the Sprinter's streamlined packaging structure. With enough ingenuity and imagination, you can make the Mercedes van into anything from a perfect parcel delivery machine to a shuttle to ferry people across town to a rugged "van life"-styled overlander and everything in between. While no pricing has been announced yet, Mercedes does promise that the 2023 Sprinter will drop some time early in 2023.
Think back to the cabins of the land yachts that plied American highways from the 1970s and you will no doubt call to mind the phrase, "," made famous by the as he smiled at camera from somewhere in the vicinity of a mid-decade Chrysler Cordoba. However, a more comprehensive view of the market back then reveals an endless wave of a synthetic material every bit as warm and lush as Montalbán's dulcet tones—velour. For a stretch of 15 or so years, it was nearly impossible to order a Detroit-built barge that didn't feature floor-to-ceiling wannabe-velvet as its interior pièce de résistance.Velour's dominant turn at the tiller of automotive styling was in step with the fashion and design trends of the day, reflecting the deep-pile carpets, upscale throwback upholstery, and of course the full velvet suits dominating both nightlife and the gym as the world reveled in a new polyester paradise. At the same time, it presided over the last hurrah for what could be considered adult-oriented automotive advertising, the tail-end of TV and print campaigns that targeted a more mature audience—rather than pandering to the approaching swell of youthful yuppies that were poised to take over the consumer mainstream with their endless amounts of disposable income.Science Brings Luxury to the Masses Ads For Mom and Dad(dy)Out With the Softest of Whimpers
Chevrolet wants you to have your cake and eat it too. The tasty treat is the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, an electric SUV that keeps the edgy look of the Blazer but gives it greater performance, the first electric SS, more interior room, and lets the customer choose the configuration of the powertrain, a unique proposition in an industry where every nameplate is fighting to stand out.By powertrain configuration, we mean the buyer can not only choose trim, color and features—but also whether their Blazer is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive. That is highly unusual in the retail world. Closest example we can think of is commercial customers in Europe who can choose a front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive Ford Transit commercial van. We'll get back to the surprising powertrain flexibility. But first let's get an overview of the electric SUV that Chevy felt deserved to be equipped to appeal to a wide consumer base globally, including those yearning for the first electric SS.Blazer EV is Whole Different Animal from Current BlazerFor starters, the Blazer EV sprang from a clean sheet. It may share the Blazer name and spirit, but does not share architecture, panels or components with the conventional Blazer with an internal combustion engine, says vice president of Chevy Marketing Steve Majoros. The wheelbase was extended by 231 mm (9.1 inches) to fit the largest battery size in, making it the longest entry in the midsize-SUV segment. The Blazer will be the second Chevy on GM's Ultium electric vehicle architecture which underpins the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV, and the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq midsize crossover. The first electric Chevy from Ultium is the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV full-size pickup due in spring 2023, followed by the Blazer next summer, and the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV compact crossover in the fall of next year. We will get our first full look at the Equinox EV in September. When the current Blazer hit streets in 2018, it ushered in a new design ethos, complete with Camaro and Corvette touches, that carries over to the EV. In this age of dynamic lighting, the Blazer EV is no exception with LED lights that travel to and from the illuminated bowtie in the middle of the light bar for a bit of theater when you approach or walk away from the vehicle. It is most dramatic on the SS with its two-tone color scheme with black fascia and top. The lighting also conveys the vehicle's state of charge: lights dance faster and shine more intensely as the battery's charge increases.Interior Roomier Than the Current BlazerThe architecture and battery pack give the Blazer EV a lower center of gravity and floor which yields more interior space and options for storage areas and clever packaging.Inside the cabin feels airy, with lots of headroom even with the optional sunroof. The low floor and extended wheelbase mean more cargo room, we await specs for the exact amount. Screens in the cockpit are angled and oriented to the driver. There is a 17.7-inch OLED free-form center touchscreen with dimming back light for crisp graphics that fill the screen to the edges—no large areas of dark screen. The driver display adds another 11.0 inches and there is a 3x7-inch head-up display that is standard on the SS, optional on the high-volume 2LT and RS trims. A video display enhances the rearview mirror. The Blazer EV SS we saw was telltale red and black, both inside and out. The red leather seats in both rows are heated and cooled and the cabin benefits from contrast stitching and higher-end materials. Rear seat passengers get vents which are controlled from up front, and two USB outlets. Not surprisingly, the Blazer EV has Camaro-style round air vents. The SUV also has an ionizer to purify the air. You can look up the air quality and some models will have a sensor to automatically turn on the filter to scrub when poor air quality requires it, especially useful for markets such as China.Back to That PowertrainThe Blazer will be offered with a front-wheel-drive unit, a choice of two rear-wheel-drive units, standard and performance all-wheel drive, and three battery sizes. Standard AWD has front drive unit and smaller rear unit. RWD offers more power than FWD and a more dynamic drive. FWD has smaller motor and choice of small or medium battery packs. Here is how the trims play out:1LT: This monochromatic base trim with cloth seats has standard FWD with a small motor in front, standard 19-inch wheels and a range of 247 miles from a single charge. Horsepower and torque figures have not been released, nor have details of the motor and the small and medium batteries expected to be on the base model.2LT: Standard FWD, optional AWD using the smaller of the two rear motors. It will have a range of up to 293 miles. No performance specs yet.RS: Choice of standard FWD with a midsize battery pack or RWD with the larger motor and medium battery pack—you choose where you want the motor—with optional dual motors for AWD. This is the trim with the longest range, up to 320 miles per charge. The RS rides on standard 21-inch wheels and has a heated flat-bottom steering wheel.SS: Standard higher-performance AWD with the larger motor on the rear axle and largest battery. This electric beast will have 557 hp, 648 lb-ft of torque which should propel it from 0-60 mph in less than 4.0 seconds, GM says. It has 290 miles of range, a sport tuned chassis, Brembo brakes, standard 22-inch wheels and the performance required to warrant the SS badging. We are assured it is a true SS. It easily becomes the quickest Blazer.Charging the 2024 Chevy Blazer EVDepending on the trim, the Blazer EV has DC public fast-charging capability of up to 190 kW which Chevy execs say will add 78 miles of range in 10 minutes. The EV has hands-free start, which means no button to push. Close the door, tap the brake, and the key fob authorizes the SUV to go. The fob also talks to the sensors at the rear of the vehicle to open the tailgate hands-free.The vehicles offer one-pedal driving, activated via a button on the touchscreen. The driver can choose how aggressive the regenerative braking is and can pull on a shift paddle on the steering wheel to make small adjustments to braking strength. Wide Open Watts or WOW is the Chevy family friendly version of the Watts to Freedom or WTF launch mode on the GMC Hummer, a maximum power model to get more current to the inverter for more power to the wheels for takeoff.Super Cruise is standard on the SS; optional on lower trims. Advanced Park Assist does the work for you, and other advanced driver assist systems include reverse automatic braking, forward collision alert, automaker emergency braking, and lane-keep assist with lane departure warning. Ultify allows over-the-air software updates to improve and personalize the vehicle over its lifetime. The Blazer comes with standard and all-season tires, with optional summer tires for performance.2024 Chevrolet Blazer Pricing and On-Sale DateThe Blazer EV will hit the market in summer 2023, launching initially with the most popular trims: the 2LT that starts at $47,595 and introduces leather seats, and the sportier RS with a $51,995 starting price. They will be followed by the high-performance SS with standard AWD ($65,995), and before year's end Chevrolet will add the base 1LT that starts at $44,995. Don't count on federal tax credits to reduce the cost; GM has used up its allotment. But Chevy does throw in free installation of a home charging unit. The Blazer EV will be built in the same Ramos Arizpe plant as the current Blazer, even though they are completely different vehicles and EVs undergo a different build process. GM is spending $1 billion to prepare the Mexican plant. Majoros said it is hard to gauge what the take rate will be of the EV; he just knows Chevy has to be ready when the market moves. "We see this initially as additive volume, so Chevy share should grow."And criminals beware, Chevy will do a Police Pursuit Vehicle model of the Blazer EV that will essentially be a modified SS with the largest battery and a choice of rear-drive or performance AWD, and Brembo brakes.2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV Specifications BASE PRICE $44,995-65,995 LAYOUT Front engine, FWD/RWD/AWD, 5-pass, 4-door SUV MOTOR 557-hp/648-lb-ft AC DC] permanent-magnet electric TRANSMISSION 1-speed auto, CURB WEIGHT WHEELBASE 121.8 in L x W x H 0-60 MPH 3.9-8.5 sec (mfr est) EPA CITY/HWY/COMB FUEL ECON EPA RANGE, COMB ON SALE Summer 2023 Show All
