By offering a unique mix of impressive all-terrain capability with traditional British luxury, Range Rovers have long defined what a luxury SUV should be. And with an array of available paint colors, engine options and other premium features, the Range Rover can be tailored to suit the taste of the most discerning buyers.

The existing 2022 Range Rover (the one that is part of the fourth-generation model that debuted in 2013) doesn't see too many changes, though the range of available engines has decreased as both the plug-in hybrid and diesel engine options are no longer offered. There's also a new trim level, known as the SVAutobiography Dynamic Black Edition. As you might expect, it's an essentially all black (inside and out) version of the standard SVAutobiography Dynamic.

However, an all-new Range Rover is on the horizon, and is set to debut later in the model year. Though it has a similar look inside and out, the new Range Rover is fully redesigned. It rides on a new platform and boasts an improved infotainment system, a new V8 engine, and — for the first time in this luxe SUV — a third row of seating. Look for more information in the coming months.

For now, the current Range Rover can certainly find its way up a slippery slope in the countryside, but it's having a much harder time finding traction against deeply impressive competition from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Even the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator offer features and capabilities that the Range Rover can't match, and for less money too. Read our Expert Rating below to help you decide if the Range Rover is the best choice for your next luxury SUV.

Which Range Rover does MatoCar recommend?

We think the Autobiography trim represents the most authentic Range Rover experience. It ensures you get the supercharged V8, an impeccably turned-out interior and Range Rover's legendary off-road capability. Added to this impressive mix is a 29-speaker audio system, 22-way power-adjustable and massaging front seats, and a nearly endless array of options for personalization. If you don't need a new SUV right now, however, the upcoming Range Rover redesign looks to be worth the wait.

The current Land Rover Range Rover is available in a head-spinning number of configurations but comes in six main trim levels: Base, Westminster, Autobiography, SVAutobiography Dynamic, SVAutobiography Dynamic Black Edition and SVAutobiography. The Base and SVAutobiography Dynamic and SV Autobiography Dynamic Black Edition trims come with the standard wheelbase, but the Westminster and Autobiography are also available in a long-wheelbase configuration. The SVAutobiography is long wheelbase only. Every Range Rover comes equipped with all-wheel drive.

Four powertrains are available, all of them mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission:

  • P360: turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder (355 horsepower, 365 lb-ft)
