The 2022 Honda HR-V is a pint-size SUV that serves as the smallest and most affordable vehicle in Honda's lineup. Despite the small footprint, the HR-V offers a surprising amount of cargo and passenger space. The interior is fairly cleverly designed, with lots of storage and easy-to-use controls. High fuel efficiency is another draw, as the EPA estimates that the HR-V can get up to 30 mpg in combined city/highway driving.

Unfortunately, the HR-V suffers from slow acceleration and a rather noisy engine when you're really gunning it. It's also one of the oldest models in its class. While the Honda HR-V was an impressive crossover when it debuted in 2016, fresher rivals such as the new Chevrolet Trailblazer, Kia Soul and Mazda CX-30 make the HR-V feel a bit dated by comparison. Which HR-V does MatoCar recommend?

We suggest going with the EX trim for the best value. It comes with some features you'll appreciate having — heated seats and traffic-adaptive cruise control, for instance — that you can't get on the LX or Sport.

The 2022 Honda HR-V is available in four trim levels: LX, Sport, EX and EX-L. All four are powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine (141 horsepower, 127 lb-ft of torque) connected to a continuously variable automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional. Feature highlights include:

LX Keeps things relatively simple with:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • 5-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • LED brake and daytime running lights
  • One USB port

Sport Building off the LX, the Sport trim adds:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Roof rails
  • Foglights
  • Paddle shifters
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • 7-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
  • Two USB ports

EX Includes a few nice-to-have features, such as:

  • Proximity keyless ignition and entry
  • Blind-spot monitoring (Honda LaneWatch; shows you a camera view of what's in your right-side blind spot)
  • Sunroof
  • Heated front seats
  • Satellite radio

Honda's suite of advanced driver aids, known as Honda Sensing, is standard on the EX and EX-L trims. It includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control (maintains a driver-set distance between the HR-V and the car in front)
  • Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
  • Lane keeping assist (steers the HR-V back into its lane if it begins to drift over the lane marker)

EX-L Sitting atop the HR-V lineup, the EX-L offers:

  • Leather seating surfaces
  • Upgraded audio system
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
