The 2022 Ford Edge is a midsize two-row SUV that slots between the smaller Ford Edge and the three-row Ford Explorer. The Edge has been on sale for a few years now and gets a handful of updates for 2022, including standard all-wheel drive and a new appearance package that brings some of the sporty ST trim's style to other Edge models. It also gets an updated infotainment system with a new 12-inch touchscreen display, bringing it in line with newer Ford models like the F-150 and Mustang Mach-E. We think Ford's latest infotainment system is one of the best around.

The Edge competes in a relatively hot segment. Some of our favorites include the Honda Passport, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and Toyota Venza. If you like the Ford's general size but occasionally need a third row, the recently redesigned Kia Sorento is an attractive alternative. The Edge is one of the oldest vehicles in its segment. Despite a handful of worthwhile updates over the years to performance, styling and features, the Edge is feeling its age. That said, it remains viable for its spacious interior and quiet ride, and there are few sporty SUV offerings like the Edge ST at this price.

Which Edge does MatoCar recommend?

Standard all-wheel drive makes the base Edge compelling, but we suggest stepping up to the midlevel SEL trim. It adds a few amenities including simulated leather upholstery and heated seats and it opens up the options list to more features.

The 2022 Ford Edge is available in five trim levels: SE, SEL, ST-Line, Titanium and the performance-focused ST. All Edge trims save for the ST use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (250 horsepower, 280 lb-ft) paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The ST gets a more powerful 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 engine (335 hp, 380 lb-ft) paired with a seven-speed automatic. Both engines feed power to the wheels through a standard all-wheel-drive system.

SE This base Ford Edge comes reasonably well equipped with:

  • 18-inch wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • 12-inch infotainment screen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • Six-speaker audio system
  • Keyless entry with push-button start
  • Ford Co-Pilot360
    • Automatic high beams
    • Blind-spot monitor with cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while reversing)
    • Lane keeping system (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
    • Forward collision mitigation (warns if a front impact is imminent and applies the brakes if you don't respond in time)

The Edge SE is also available with a new Black Appearance package that adds:

  • 19-inch gloss black wheels
  • Black badges
  • Slightly tweaked bumpers, grille and exterior trim

SEL The SEL trim is similar to the SE but adds:

  • Simulated leather upholstery
  • Power-adjustable, heated front seats
  • Nine-speaker audio system
  • Ford's SecuriCode entry keypad

Additional options for the SEL include:

  • Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+
    • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front)
    • Evasive steering assist (enhances the forward collision mitigation system with steering-based collision avoidance)
    • Navigation system
  • Convenience package
    • Household-style 110-volt power outlet
    • Security alarm
    • Power liftgate
    • Remote start
    • Wireless charging pad
  • Adventure package
    • 18-inch carbonized wheels with all-terrain tires
    • ActiveX faux leather seating material (more durable and stain-resistant)
    • Black and gray exterior accents

ST-Line The ST-Line is basically an Edge SEL with some sporty design touches, plus some extra standard features, including:

  • Black exterior trim and lower front and rear fascias
  • Body-colored bumpers and lower cladding
  • 20-inch gloss black wheels
  • ActiveX faux leather seats
  • Red accent interior stitching
  • Standard Convenience package

Titanium The Titanium trim gives the Edge a more premium feel with:

  • 19-inch wheels
  • Hands-free liftgate
  • Leather upholstery
  • More power adjustments for the front passenger seat
  • Wireless smartphone charging pad
  • Remote engine start
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system
  • Front parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of the vehicle when parking)
  • Standard Convenience package

Options for ST-Line and Titanium trims include:

  • Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+
    • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front)
    • Evasive steering assist (enhances the forward collision mitigation system with steering-based collision avoidance)
    • Navigation system
  • Lux package (Titanium trim)
    • Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+
    • Ventilated front seats
    • Heated rear seats
    • Front-facing camera
    • Automated parking system (steers into a parking spot with little or no driver intervention)
  • Panoramic glass roof
  • Towing package (with Class II hitch)

ST The Edge ST is the sportiest model in the lineup and uses a turbocharged V6. It builds on the SEL trim with:

  • 20-inch black painted wheels
  • Sport suspension
  • Black and body-colored exterior trim that's similar to the ST-Line's
  • Front sport seats with silver stitching
  • Leather and suede-like upholstery
  • 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system

Options include:

  • ST Performance Brake package
    • 21-inch gloss-black wheels
    • Larger brakes with red-painted calipers and performance pads
    • Improved cooling
    • Summer tires for better grip
  • High package (similar to the Titanium's Lux package)
