Shoppers looking for a small, inexpensive car seem to have fewer choices every year. In fact, two of our favorite pint-sized hatchbacks — the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit — were recently discontinued. But there are still a few models worth seeking out, and one of them is the 2022 Chevrolet Spark.

The Spark offers strong value for the money. It has good fuel economy, a low starting price and a long list of standard features. Some rivals — including the Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent — are a little more powerful, efficient and more generously equipped. For instance, both of those competitors come with standard power door locks and windows, which are optional on the Spark. However, the existence of far less desirable vehicles in the class (Mitsubishi Mirage, we're looking at you) confirms that while the Spark isn't the most enticing hatchback out there, it's still a solid pick.

Which Spark does MatoCar recommend?

If you're considering a subcompact vehicle, chances are that the out-the-door price is a major consideration. That said, the base LS is a little too bare-bones for us to recommend. The next-level 1LT is a great option if you want to keep costs low but still have desirable features. The power accessories, remote locking/unlocking and cruise control features will pay dividends over the years.

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark is a subcompact hatchback that's sold in four trim levels: LS, 1LT, Activ and 2LT. Every Spark is powered by a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine making 98 horsepower and 94 lb-ft of torque. You can choose between a five-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) on all four trims.

LS This base trim starts you off with:

  • 15-inch steel wheels
  • Automatic headlights
  • Manual windows, mirrors and door locks
  • Air conditioning
  • Height-adjustable driver's seat
  • 60/40-split folding rear seats
  • 7-inch touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility
  • Two USB ports
  • Four-speaker audio system
  • OnStar communications service with onboard Wi-Fi hotspot

1LT The next step up adds on:

  • 15-inch alloy wheels
  • Power windows, mirrors and door locks
  • Heated mirrors
  • Audio and phone controls on steering wheel
  • Cruise control
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Six-speaker audio system
  • Satellite radio

You can add the following options to the Spark 1LT:

  • Sunroof
  • Spark Special Edition package (requires two-tone exterior)
    • Black-painted wheels
    • Black-painted grille

Activ A more adventurous trim includes:

  • Unique grille, bumpers and black exterior accents
  • Roof rails
  • Foglights
  • Protective door plates
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Heated front seats
  • Simulated leather upholstery
  • Suspension with 0.4 inch higher ground clearance

2LT This top trim takes 1LT equipment and adds:

  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • Chrome door handles and trim
  • Upgraded driver information display
  • Heated front seats
  • Simulated leather seating surfaces
  • Rear parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible behind the vehicle when parking)

The Spark 2LT options include:

  • Sunroof
  • Driver Confidence package (CVT only)
    • Automatic emergency braking (warns if a front impact is imminent and applies the brakes if you don't respond in time)
    • Lane departure warning (alerts you if the vehicle begins to drift out of its lane)
