  • Comfortable and luxurious cabin
  • Sporty handling and acceleration
  • Impressive off-road capabilities

  • Modest cargo capacity for the class

  • Plug-in hybrid and diesel engines no longer available
  • Minor changes to optional and standard equipment
  • Part of the second Range Rover Sport generation introduced for 2014

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a midsize luxury SUV. It slots between the full-size Range Rover and the smaller, sleeker Range Rover Evoque in Land Rover's lineup. The current-generation Range Rover Sport dates back to 2014, but Land Rover has made enough rolling updates over the years to largely keep pace with the competition.

There are a few significant changes for 2022, most notably to the powertrain offerings. The turbocharged diesel V6 is no longer available, and the plug-in hybrid variant has been dropped for 2022 because of parts shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Range Rover Sport has a lot of competition in the market. Some of our favorite midsize luxury SUVs include the Audi Q8, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Porsche Cayenne. Compared to those rivals, the Range Rover Sport is a step or two behind in terms of comfort and technology features. It's also somewhat more expensive, though you do get respectable off-road capability as part of the deal. Overall, the Range Rover Sport isn't our top pick for a midsize SUV, but it has a certain charm that's hard to replicate elsewhere.

Which Range Rover Sport does MatoCar recommend?

We think the best pick of the bunch is the HSE Silver Edition. It offers more standard features than the base SE while keeping the cost reasonable. You'll probably want the Drive Pro Pack option as it adds some helpful advanced driver aids such as traffic-adaptive cruise control.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is available in seven trim levels: SE, HSE Silver Edition, HST, HSE Dynamic, Autobiography, SVR and SVR Carbon Edition. For 2022, the engine lineup has been slimmed down. Land Rover no longer offers the diesel engine or the plug-in hybrid powertrain. That leaves the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and supercharged 5.0-liter V8 as the only two engines. Both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive.

SE Starts you out with:

  • Turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine (355 horsepower, 365 lb-ft)
  • 19-inch wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Power liftgate
  • Proximity keyless entry and push-button start
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Digital instrument panel
  • 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration

Every Range Rover Sport also comes with:

  • Lane keeping assist (steers the Range Rover Sport back into its lane if it begins to drift over the lane marker)
  • Parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking)
  • Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)

HSE Silver Edition Gains a bevy of features, including:

  • 21-inch wheels
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Upgraded power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated rear seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Front console refrigerator
  • Four-zone automatic climate control
  • Cabin air ionizer
  • 19-speaker Meridian audio system
  • Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)
  • Driver attention warning (issues an alert if sensors determine you are becoming fatigued)
  • Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the Range Rover Sport and its surroundings for tight parking situations)

HST Sportier than the HSE Silver Edition, the HST has:

  • Increased engine output of 395 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque
  • Adaptive suspension (enhances ride comfort and handling)
  • Contrasting black roof
  • Black exterior trim
  • Aluminum interior trim
  • Leather and simulated suede upholstery

HSE Dynamic Comes with a V8 engine and a set of features similar to that of the SE trim. It also includes:

  • Supercharged 5.0-liter V8 (518 hp, 461 lb-ft)
  • Air suspension (can adjust the vehicle's ride height)
  • 21-inch wheels
  • Upgraded power-adjustable seats
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • 13-speaker Meridian audio system
  • Additional leather trim
  • Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Driver attention warning

Autobiography The most luxurious trim available on the Range Rover Sport, the Autobiography has just about everything above as standard, plus:

  • Even more adjustments for the front seats
  • Soft-close doors (catch as they're being closed and gently pull shut)
  • 19-speaker Meridian audio system

SVR Effectively a sportier version of the Autobiography, the SVR has:

  • More powerful supercharged V8 (575 hp, 516 lb-ft)
  • Sport-tuned air suspension
  • Upgraded brakes
  • Front sport seats
  • Sport steering wheel

SVR Carbon Edition While Land Rover breaks this out into a separate trim, it's more of a package for the standard SVR. Upgrades include:

  • 22-inch gloss black wheels
  • Exposed carbon-fiber hood
  • Carbon-fiber engine cover
  • Carbon-fiber interior and exterior trim

The Range Rover Sport is available with a number of options. Notable ones include:

  • Drive Pro Pack
    • Blind-spot monitor (SE trim only)
    • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front and can also react to traffic signs and set speed)
    • Upgraded frontal collision mitigation system
  • Towing Pack
  • Off-Road Pack
    • Additional drive modes
    • Transfer case with low range
  • 23-speaker Meridian audio system
  • Cabin air ionizer
  • Head-up display (displays important information in your sight line on the windshield)
