  • Smooth on-road driving manners
  • Above-average capabilities off-road
  • Luxurious interior with excellent materials
  • Clever features in terms of utility and technology

  • Back seat isn't terrifically roomy

  • No changes to the 2022 Discovery
  • Part of the fifth Discovery generation introduced for 2017

The 2022 Land Rover Discovery offers a unique blend of luxurious interior appointments, comfortable everyday road manners and genuine off-road capability in a midsize three-row SUV package. That third row positions the Discovery as the family option in Land Rover's lineup, sitting above the more rugged Defender and below the extra-luxurious Range Rover.

The big changes for the Discovery arrived with its refresh for 2021, with revised exterior styling, a new infotainment system with a larger touchscreen, redesigned second-row seats, and new drivetrain choices among the highlights. As such, the 2022 Land Rover Discovery soldiers on virtually unchanged. The Discovery competes with other three-row luxury SUVs, including the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Genesis GV80 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, which offers third-row seating as an option.

Which Discovery does MatoCar recommend?

The Discovery is pretty well equipped in base form, but if you like your SUVs with a little more low-end grunt you'll need to upgrade to the S R-Dynamic. In addition to getting some exterior upgrades, it's available with the 355-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder engine.

The 2022 Land Rover Discovery is offered in three trim levels: S, S R-Dynamic and HSE R-Dynamic. Two engine choices are available: a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 296 horsepower and a turbocharged inline six-cylinder good for 355 hp. A mild hybrid system is optional on the S R-Dynamic and standard on the HSE R-Dynamic. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic are standard across the range. The Discovery offers seating for five passengers, but a third row with two additional seats is a no-cost option.

S The base Discovery S trim comes fairly well equipped. Standard features include:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Panoramic glass roof
  • LED headlights
  • Foglights
  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • Two-zone automatic climate control
  • Five-passenger seating

Standard technology and advanced driver aids include:

  • 11.4-inch touchscreen display
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Multiple USB-A and USB-C ports
  • Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the Discovery and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
  • Lane keeping assist (steers the Discovery back into its lane if it begins to drift over the lane marker)
  • Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)
  • Automatic emergency braking (warns if a front impact is imminent and applies the brakes if you don't respond in time)
  • Parking sensors (alert you to obstacles that may not be visible in front of or behind the vehicle when parking)

Notable options on the Discovery S include:

  • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front)
  • Head-up display (displays important information in your sight line onto the windshield)
  • Meridian audio system
  • Third-row seat for seven-passenger capacity
  • Cold Climate package
    • Heated steering wheel
    • Heated windshield
    • Heated headlight washers
  • Hot Climate package
    • Chilled center console
    • Four-zone automatic climate control
    • Cabin air purifier

S R-Dynamic The Discovery S R-Dynamic has a few stylistic differences compared to the base S but is otherwise similar for standard and optional features. You can also get the S R-Dynamic with the upgraded 355-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine.

HSE R-Dynamic The top-level Discovery HSE R-Dynamic trim comes standard with the 355-hp engine and seven-seat configuration. In addition to the S R-Dynamic's features, you get:

  • 22-inch wheels
  • Hands-free tailgate
  • Upgraded LED headlights
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Upgraded power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated rear seats
  • Power-folding third-row seats
  • Upgraded leather upholstery
  • Meridian sound system

Other notable options include:

  • Towing package (tow hitch plus other towing-related enhancements)
  • Advanced Off-Road Capability package
  • Ventilated second-row rear seats
  • More powerful Meridian sound system
