- Kicks off the first Genesis GV60 generation
The 2023 Genesis GV60 is an all-new, all-electric subcompact luxury SUV. It shares many components with the forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, but the GV60 adopts many of Genesis' styling traits that include an oversized grille and double-striped headlights and taillights. The clamshell style hood is a nice touch and we dig the neatly integrated rear spoiler, but the overall look is one that will have to grow on us over time. We expect the interior will feature more refined materials and additional tech features to match what we believe will be a higher price than where its Hyundai/Kia siblings sit, but few official details have been revealed on that front. Images from Genesis show virtual sideview mirrors that use small mirror stalks with cameras instead of a traditional mirror to reduce wind resistance. We don't expect these virtual mirrors to make it to the U.S. market, though, since they're not yet approved for use by the Department of Transportation. Genesis is making a big deal over its Crystal Sphere shift-by-wire controller, which is really just a faceted clear dome in place of a typical dial gear selector.
What's under the GV60's hood?Genesis recently released a number of figures for the GV60's powertrain, but it's worth noting at the start that all of these are specifically for the Korean market cars. The range estimates and power figures detailed below might be different from the U.S.-spec vehicles.
All GV60s will pull from the same 77.4-kWh battery pack, with base cars featuring a single electric motor on the rear axle providing 225 horsepower. Genesis says this version of the GV60 will have a maximum range of 280 miles on a single charge, though this figure is based on South Korea's EV testing procedure. As with pretty much every EV on sale today, all-wheel drive is available, with the GV60 adding a second motor to the front axle. Combined output between the two motors stands at 314 horsepower. With an extra motor using up the same size battery pack's juice, range falls to 249 miles.
If you're after even more poke, the Genesis will happily sell you a top-of-the-range GV60 that produces 429 horsepower normally, or up to 483 hp while using the short-term Boost mode. Unsurprisingly, range falls even further in this trim, with a total range of just 229 miles on a full charge. Again, these ranges are based on South Korea's testing procedures, which are different from the standard that the EPA uses to rate the range of electric vehicles.
How's the GV60's interior?Like a number of major automakers these days, Genesis is focusing on sustainable manufacturing processes for its new EV. As a result, some of the GV60's interior panels, including the seats and armrests, are covered in a synthetic leather. The seat inlays and parts of the door card are made from fibers that are harvested from recycled plastic bottles and fishnets. Genesis is also offering the interior with five different color palettes to give customers the chance to go for something unique.
How's the GV60's tech?Full interior details about the interior are still mostly under wraps. We don't know what kind of interior tech the GV60 will feature, but industry standards like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity are safe bets. We also expect the GV60 to feature most (if not all) of Genesis' available driver assist technologies, but questions still remain as to whether the GV60 will introduce anything we haven't seen from the luxury manufacturer before.
MatoCar saysThe 2023 Genesis GV60 is the next logical step in the company's evolution as a luxury brand. It joins the recently announced Electrified G80 sedan as Genesis prepares its transition to more EVs in its lineup. Keep checking back here for more news and information in the coming year.
