  • Roomy seating and cargo area
  • Infotainment system is quick and sharp-looking

  • Ride is busy for a luxury SUV
  • Lots of engine and road noise
  • Some controls are confusing to use
  • Luxury features you'd expect to be standard are optional

  • The XT4 returns largely unchanged for 2022
  • Part of the first XT4 generation introduced for 2019

The 2022 Cadillac XT4 is Cadillac's smallest and lowest-priced luxury SUV. It debuted back for 2019 and carries on into 2022 without any major updates. The XT4 may be small compared to the likes of the Escalade, but it's actually one of the roomier vehicles in its class, offering plenty of passenger and cargo space for the price. The easy-to-use infotainment system is another highlight.

But there are some downsides too. The ride is stiff, and the engine sounds loud and unrefined. We expect more refinement from a luxury SUV. Other extra-small SUVs such as the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLB, and Volvo XC40 offer a more compelling set of attributes. Check out our Expert Rating to learn more about the XT4's strengths and weaknesses.

Which XT4 does MatoCar recommend?

As with most vehicles, we think the midlevel trim offers the best mix of features and value. We suggest opting for the Premium Luxury model. It adds a number of driver aids, including blind-spot monitoring, that are worth the step up in price.

The 2022 XT4 is available in three trim levels that are largely unchanged from last year: Luxury, Premium Luxury and Sport. All three use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder (237 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque) paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, though all trims are available with all-wheel drive. Standard feature highlights include:

Luxury The base Luxury trim starts you off with:

  • 18-inch wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Proximity keyless entry with push-button start
  • Remote engine start via the key fob
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Power liftgate
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Simulated leather upholstery

The Luxury also comes with:

  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration (with wireless connectivity)
  • 8-inch touchscreen display
  • Seven-speaker sound system
  • Automatic emergency braking (warns if a front impact is imminent and applies the brakes if you don't respond in time)

Options for the Luxury trim include:

  • Cold Weather package
    • Heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel
  • Driver Awareness package
    • Following distance indicator
    • Lane keeping assist (alerts you if the vehicle begins to drift out of its lane and can make minor steering corrections to keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
  • Upgraded Bose audio system
  • Sunroof

Premium Luxury The Premium Luxury model builds on the Luxury trim, adding:

  • Memory settings for the driver's seat
  • Blind-spot monitor (alerts you if a vehicle in the next lane over is in your blind spot)
  • Rear cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle behind you is about to cross your vehicle's path while you're in reverse)
  • Hands-free liftgate
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers

You can get the same options above for the Premium Luxury. Cadillac also offers:

  • Driver Assistance package (requires Driver Awareness package)
    • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the XT4 and the car in front)
    • Reverse emergency braking (brakes if sensors detect an imminent collision with an object behind the vehicle)
  • Comfort and Convenience package
    • Massaging and ventilated front seats
  • Technology package
    • Air ionizer (helps filter air in the cabin)
    • Head-up display
    • Power-adjustable steering wheel
    • Wireless phone charging
  • Enhanced Visibility package
    • Rear pedestrian alert
    • Digital rearview mirror (allows you to see out the back even with a fully loaded cargo area)
    • Surround-view camera (gives you a top-down view of the XT4 and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
    • Automatic parking assist (steers into a parking spot with no driver intervention)

Sport The Sport trim level is basically an appearance package for the XT4. It generally mirrors the Premium Luxury trim in features and options. Changes include:

  • Seats with adjustable bolsters
  • Sport steering wheel
  • Body-colored exterior trim and accents including the grille, mirrors and door handles
  • Red brake calipers

Specific options for the Sport include:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Sport-tuned suspension with adaptive dampers
