  • Both available engines are smooth, powerful and fuel-efficient
  • Easy personalization thanks to abundant standard and optional features
  • Impressive handling for an SUV

  • Sloping roofline compromises rear headroom and cargo space

  • Revised grille, bumpers, headlights and taillights
  • M40i trim adds 48-volt mild hybrid system
  • Redesigned instrument cluster and larger infotainment screen
  • Sport seats with increased bolstering now standard
  • Part of the second X4 generation introduced for 2019

The BMW X4 is for someone who wants to drive something sporty but still have room for passengers and cargo. The X4 provides that along with more cargo room than a sedan, but less than the X3 it's based on because of the sloping roofline. Unlike many SUVs, the X4 handles well, although not as well as a sport sedan. If you need a lot of rear passenger space and cargo room, consider the more traditional X3 or larger X5.

The X4's potent engines and impressive handling dynamics back up its sporty looks, something that's not usually the case with sporty-looking SUVs. Light off-roading is possible thanks to the standard all-wheel-drive system. The X4 isn't alone in the segment — the premium fastback SUV competes with strong rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and Porsche Macan. Which X4 does MatoCar recommend?

The base xDrive30i should satisfy most people, but if you're seeking a truly quick and sporty SUV, we recommend buying the M40i. The upgraded model has much more power, sharper handling and improved styling cues. The optional Premium package adds comfort and convenience features including keyless entry, a head-up display, heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The 2022 BMW X4 is offered in two all-wheel-drive models (the X4 M is reviewed separately). The base xDrive30i comes equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The M40i packs a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 382 hp and 369 lb-ft. An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission choice.
