  • Sharp steering and precise handling
  • Powerful and exciting engines
  • Distinctive styling helps it stand out from the crowd

  • Snug cargo volume (but not compared to “coupe-style” SUVs)
  • Missing some of the latest tech features
  • Overly sensitive brake pedal

  • New Veloce model replaces the Ti Sport
  • Several driving assistance systems are now standard
  • Part of the first Stelvio generation introduced in 2018

Alfa Romeo is nothing if not passionate, and among small luxury SUVs, the 2022 Stelvio is one of the most adept at kindling your driving spirit. Rewarding driving dynamics are baked into every version of the Stelvio, which wears a distinctive look that sets it further apart from its rivals. Whether you see it or hear it before driving it, you know the Stelvio is different. And when you get behind the wheel, this Alfa Romeo's primary purpose is obvious. It exists to give you a thrill, especially in downright riotous Quadrifoglio specification.

There are penalties to be paid for the Stelvio's exciting driving dynamics and dapper Italian design. The cargo area is relatively small, though this is a matter of perspective. Compared to SUVs with pronounced coupe-like styling, the Stelvio suffers no utility penalty. It also doesn't look particularly luxurious from the driver's seat, a function of its driver-focused purpose. Some competitors also offer more sophisticated technologies. But if you're a driving enthusiast with a strong sense of individualism and you'd rather not own the same compact luxury SUV everyone else does, the 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is sure to please.

Which Stelvio does MatoCar recommend?

Of the 2022 Stelvio's four trim levels, we recommend the Ti, which slots in one rung above the base Sprint model. The Stelvio Ti includes standard all-wheel drive and provides access to a wider variety of options at a competitive price.

Alfa Romeo offers the 2022 Stelvio in Sprint, Ti, Veloce and Quadrifoglio trim levels. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (280 horsepower, 306 lb-ft of torque) powers the Sprint, Ti and Veloce, while the performance-tuned Quadrifoglio boasts a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 (505 hp, 443 lb-ft). Each engine employs an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all Stelvios have all-wheel drive except for the Sprint. It comes standard with rear-wheel drive and AWD is available as an option.

Sprint Comes standard with:

  • 18-inch wheels
  • Xenon headlights
  • Heated side mirrors
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Power liftgate
  • Remote engine start
  • Keyless entry and push-button start
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Leather upholstery
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated front and rear seats
  • Heated steering wheel

The Stelvio Sprint also has:

  • 8.8-inch touchscreen display
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • Navigation system
  • Eight-speaker audio system
  • Wireless smartphone charger
  • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the Stelvio and the car in front and provides stop-and-go capability in traffic)
  • Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
  • Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)
  • Lane departure warning (alerts you if the vehicle begins to drift out of its lane)
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Front and rear parking sensors

Ti Has additional features, including:

  • All-wheel drive
  • 19-inch wheels
  • Headlight washers
  • Wood interior trim
  • Dual-pane glass sunroof
  • Hands-free liftgate

Veloce New for 2022, the Stelvio Veloce replaces the previous Ti Sport and comes with:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Red brake calipers
  • Limited-slip rear differential
  • Body-colored exterior trim
  • Gloss black window surrounds
  • Aluminum interior trim
  • Sport front seats

Quadrifoglio Meant for maximum performance, the Quadrifoglio comes with the upgraded engine noted above, along with:

  • Restyled hood, bumpers and grille
  • Summer performance tires
  • Upgraded transmission and all-wheel-drive system
  • Torque-vectoring rear differential (can enhance traction and handling balance when exiting corners)
  • Unique driving modes
  • Adaptive suspension
  • Brembo high-performance brakes
  • Dual-mode exhaust
  • Carbon-fiber interior trim
  • Leather and simulated suede sport front seats with adjustable thigh support
  • Harman Kardon premium sound system

Alfa Romeo offers an Active Assist Plus option package for all Stelvios except the base Sprint model. It installs:

  • Driver attention warning (issues an alert if sensors determine you are becoming fatigued)
  • Blind-spot intervention (automatically steers the car back into its lane if you try to change lanes while a car is in the vehicle's blind spot)
  • Lane keeping assist (steers the Stelvio back into its lane if it begins to drift over the lane marker)
  • Lane keeping system (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
  • Traffic sign recognition system (reads traffic signs and automatically adjusts vehicle speed)
